I purchased my first McMillan a mcwoody awhile back .I just received my barreled action (Remington 700)from my gunsmith this week so I installed the action but the barrel doesn't sit in the barrel channel . Near the end of the forearm it's touching the barrel while the other side has a gap is this normal? Is there a fix to this problem?

I'd make sure the lug is completely center, very common to have them off a bit.

Also check the ass end to see if there's anything rubbing and pushing it to one side.

Not bedded? If the lug is straight, I would find out what is pushing the action off center and relieve the spot with a little careful demel work. Once the barreled action sits in the inletting straight with no pressure I would bed it.

How would I go about checking to see if the lug is square?

I always bed the lug, then don't have to worry about how well it fits.

I especially think the Edge series needs to be bedded. In a few months, this custom FN/#2 Shilen 23" 6.5x55 is going to be wearing an Edge Mauser Classic McWoody/half inch brown Decelerator. I'm going to sell the B&C Medalist. It's a great stock, just want a lighter rig. I may Steel Bed the lug. I think enough of this gun to spend $700 upgrading to the McM. It shoots 139 gr. Scenars half inch at a hundred, has a Canjar trigger I tweaked to perfection, a VX-2 3-9x40 CDS in Talleys. DF

DF OP's talking about how well the barrel fits the inletting in the stock. If you just bed the lug, that doesn't take care of the initial problem of the poor fitting barrel in the channel..

Find the center of the lug and go backwards.

Point well taken. No, when I bed it, it's straight/centered in the stock, nothing binding, barrel free floated. I'm very particular about details and having it as close to perfect as humanly possible. DF

Also check the ass end to see if there's anything rubbing and pushing it to one side. Yep, the tang is generally where I've had to relieve some issues on McMillans.

Like the others have replied, it is almost certain that your problem is related to an off-center recoil lug installation.
The 'smith who worked on your Remington 700 should have used a Kleinendorst recoil lug alignment tool, or something like it, to insure that it was centered when he installed the barrel. They are cheap and they work.

I was wondering about that.
Look at the barreled action and see if the recoil lug is symmetrical, is in its correct place, not rotated slightly.
If the smith put the barreled action in the stock, he should have check for proper positioning, symmetry.

Is this an issue kampfield would be able to take care of(centering the barrel and bedding) ? If so when I send it for flutting and cerakote I'll just have him do some inletting to get the barrel lined up and bed the rifle.
