Looking into buying a UL or L spinning rod . Will use in small boat and mostly standing on Dock jigging for crappie and Bluegills. Looking at 6' BnM and Cabelas pro PTC
what do you use for lite duty rods.

I've been using St. Croix PS66LF (Premier 6'6" light action Fast tip 1 piece) for MANY years (I have 3 actually) with 4 or 6# fireline they are ultra sensitive, and we fish perch on Lake Erie usually at 50+ feet, down to 75'deep!!.



I have used the 2 pc, and they are very good rods, but the one piece seems to be a little more sensitive to me.

They also handle the occasional catfish, small mouth bass, lake trout, and walleye we get by accident.
Netted a 13.9# catfish with this rod, and 4# test fireline, last spring..

I wanted a light spinning rod.
Something just a bit longer and stiffer then my 5' ultra-light creek rods.
Looked at dozens, ranging from $50 to $150, all the well known brands.
It came down to the two best.
St. Croix and Okuma
The St. Croix was $130 and the Okuma was $50
I spent the extra money on a good reel & line.

Okuma SST 6'6", medlight two piece

Okuma "celilo" 5'6" UL two piece, $26.53 delivered, Amazon. Just checked, they've still got them. Using a Shimano Sienna 1000 reel and 4lb mono. I've got less than seventy bucks in the whole deal. I've only used it a few times and haven't caught anything over 2lbs but so far no problems.

I'll be casting lite jigs and vertical casting light jigs on docks

I've been very happy with B-n-M's 7' Sam Heaton super sensitive UL spinning rod for the techniques you mentioned.

Grizzly Jig has them online for $43 +shipping. You can also get spare tips (a must for me) for $20. It is a parabolic action rod that casts light jigs well and, like the name implies, lets you feel everything your jig is doing. I also find I loose less crappie at the boat because of the soft action.

I have a 7' Sams super sensitive jigging rod and it's a good rod for the money. Mine is a light. The guides and reels eat are kinda cheap but I like the action. My next purchase will be a St Croix 7'light action extra fast panfish series. Absolutely rave reviews by all.

BPS Micro-Lite Graphite, NOT GLASS, and Berkley Trout Dough rods have worked well for me.

Great for panfish and small trout.

I like to cash nymphs with a casting bubble for weight and to keep the nymph off the bottom.

For jigging on docks as in standing on the dock and vertical jigging a short rod would be better. I didn't read the original post thoroughly, sorry. B&M Sharpshooters would be a good choice but fenwick makes a 5'3" light that is really good for this and shooting docks. My fenwick is either a hmx or an hmg I can't remember. St Croix make several rods in their panfish series and they are very nice, I have fished with the 6'9" ul and it's sweet. I think they make a 6' too but I'm not positive.
