Dang, I've been looking forever for a 1957 270 model 70. Too rich for my blood this time. I can't help you, mine is 1958. But you wouldn't want it, it has those awful stripes, and the plastic butt plate really makes it worthless. Holy moly! She's a beauty. Thanks for posting. Still looking for my 57 270......might as well book a unicorn hunt while I'm at it.

It will ultimately be worth what someone will pay, no more no less. I know of a NIB 270 FWT SG that sold for $12K. Another gun that was IMHO way overpriced but not to someone.
My 1950 something 95% 270 FWT for what I thought was a lot of hard earned dollars isn't looking to bad right about now:)

BSA, that's good to know that he's not a schmuck. The nice ones are fun to look at, even if they're out of my price range.
I'm also still on my Holy Grail hunt for a .270 FWT. If I ever get totally tired of looking, I may put my standard in a Mickey or something. I just hate to split up these beautiful old girls.

My 1950 something 95% 270 FWT for what I thought was a lot of hard earned dollars isn't looking to bad right about now:) I paid more for my 270 fwt than any other rifle I own. It's in excellent condition though. I thought it was quite a bit, but was happy to get it because it was hard to come across any other 270 fwt's locally. My smith had 4 270 fwt's on his table at the gunshow and told me he was hoping I swung by because he was saving the best of the bunch for me. He also had a NIB beautiful sob for $1,700.00 and I passed for the one that he said shot like a house a fire. It was his favorite out of the 4 he had and he knew the history on it since he had owned it for something like 35 years. I still don't regret forking over $1,350.00 for the rifle, since it is a shooter (like he said) and it functions like a well oiled machine. Sometimes I think you get what you pay for and to get a damn good rifle like these 270 fwt's, you have to pay a little more. Or a premium you might say. Like I've said before, most 270 fwt's have been hunted hard and put away wet. Just like the 375's. Guys bought those rifles to use, and use they did....

BSA, I'm with you. I'd gladly plunk down that $$ for a .270 fwt like that.

I have a couple Model 70's like that. My guess would be that they produced parts in batches, then used the supply until it ran low. Seems like I've hears that before. Know of a .250/3000 carbine with a 1932 barrel date and a 1947 receiver....

From a shooting, hunting collector point of view ,I had rather have this gun in my stable at 1500.00 than the other at 5K+, From a pure advanced collector standpoint the SG would be the cats azz! I met an old timer in the late 80's at the Shrine Temple, a Matt Eastman Gunshow that collected nothing but high grade,90+% Super Grades... Pure mod 70 porn!! Looking back the prices he wanted then look like they would would have been great investments now! very best winpoor

I'm looking at a SG 300 Savage. The receiver dates to 1950 and according to Rule's book it was only made for one year 1947. I have asked for pictures of the barrel date stamp but haven't received them yet.

So. When is Rule right? And how do you know when he isn't?

I have asked for pictures of the barrel date stamp but haven't received them yet. You'd think that if it were made for only one year it would be a no brainer that it would be stamped "47". Funny thing about Winchester, no one knew what the hell they were doing and the documentation was weak at best...A SG 300 savage would be cool as hell though...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Your buddy Bert Hartman would also be in the same boat. No one is "all knowing" when it comes to these old rifles...I've talked to a lot of older gentlemen that had some "inside scoop" and cool stories, but then again, who do you fully believe????

So. When is Rule right? And how do you know when he isn't? I have his phone number if you want to talk to him.... Ahhh, why would I? He knows his Model 70's, but I don't think I could pin him down to say this particular rifle is absolutely legit. He can say possibly yes or no at best. Now If you say this seller is a good guy I'll go along with it. But if something pops up a year from now that it isn't legit, is he going to make a refund or is the buyer stuck with a fraud. Good man if he does, if not the buyer has a some choices to make and we all know what they are. My contention is it seems everyone of these rarities that show uphere have questions. Everyone has their doubters. I think more often than not, the person who finally reaches for their wallet really doesn't want to know the truth.

I have done business with the seller for 15 years plus and never been stuck. I could always get my purchase price back.
