Jumpin' in kinda late. Here's my personal collection of boolits recovered from Blacktails here in Alaska. Most are partitions, since I load for the biggest critter I may run into [his name is Bruno]

[Linked Image]

1. 200 gr / .30 cal from an '06. Stem to stern. Shot under neck (trying for a neck shot on a doe standing uphill looking straigt at me) ran along the backstrap and found in ham near bunghole

2. That'd be a 200 gr / .30 cal Barnes Original in a 300 Winnie. Biggest buck I've ever shot here in AK. About 75 yds broadside. Didn't exit, but a bang-flop deal. A bit too much expansion - which limited penetration.

3 - 5 various 250 gr / .338 cal partitions from a .338 Winnie. All but #4 hit some pretty good bone. All at 20-50 yds.

Still trying to recover a 300 gr P/T pill from my .375-338.

I took a spike at 260 yards with a 200grn Partition out of a .300 H&H. Worked like a charm.

I shot a WY whitetail at a lasered 292 yds with a 225gr NP out of 358STA. Caught the heavy bone below the shoulder blade on both sides. Lots of meat damage due to lots of energy expended. Bullet is somewhere in the WY hillside.

Shot a button buck in PA (I know but I didn't see the buttons) with the same setup. Purposely aimed behind the shoulder. Didn't even hit a rib. No meat damage.

They group within an inch of Sierra GKs which I use for practice. May try 200gr X but I'm in no hurry. Anyone have experience with them?

My personal experience is rather limited compared to many of you, but I have killed a good number of whitetail using Partitions in 6.5x55 and 7x57 rifles. All were one shot kills with very little tracking required. Partitions are my preferred hunting bullet. I know many others will work just fine, and that some do cost less. Make mine the Partition.

Over the last 25 years I've shot somewhere between 75 & 100 whitetails with Partitions in calibers from 243 up to the big 300 mags. They are IMO the absolute best bullet ever. I have recovered very few which is what I like. Caliber size entry 2x caliber exit. ALWAYS a good blood trail IF you need it. 163bc

This year was my first experience with Partitions. I developed a 25 cal wildcat on the 204 Ruger case. Gives me a reliable deer cartridge on a small boltface action. From all the praise and reputation over the years I picked the 100gr NPT (2750fps). Shooting in heavy cover in WI I took a 70yd shot at a very large deer (225+). Broadside chest shot took out a rib on the way in pulped the lungs and took another rib on the otherside the bullet did not exit but was not found. Six large leaps (30yds) and piled up, great blood trail. I'm hooked on them for this cartridge.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Have taken about 20 deer with 165 partitions in a 308 and last season added a cow elk and a 650 lb black bear, excellent performance.

Looking for results of the partition on whitetails...Dont hear about them used on whitetails very much

Shot three Whitetails this year so far. (Our rifle season comes back in In Jan) With my .308 using 165 Partitions pushed by a case full of VarGet=2800ft/sec. 1st buck, about 150lbs was running shot broadside sl behind the shoulder..ran about 30 yards and down. Lungs etc. mush. 2nd buck pretty good Pa. 10 pointer about 165lbs..quartering towards me about 110 yards. Broke the near shoulder, passed through the lungs, top of the paunch and exited from the right hip. Jumped straight up and stumbled about 25 yards downhill. Last deer fat doe broadside at 75yds through the shoulders..bang/flop.

I have been using 165's in the .308 as it shoots them fairly well. Have used BT as well with good results as well. Settled on the partitions just in case I decide to use it on MD or elk. Pretty Much set up for anything. Do have some 150 TSX that I will try this week and may use them in the third season. The .308 is my back up go to rifle...it's always ready.

My wife and I have shot a bunch of deer of all sizes with Partitions, including 100-grain 6mm in .240 Weatherby; 100 and 115 .25 in .250 Savage, .257 Roberts and .257 AI; 125 and 140 6.5mm in .260 and 6.5x55; 130 and 150 .270; 140 7mm in 7x57 and 150 and 160 in .280; 150, 165, 180 and 200 in various .30's from .308 to .300 Wby.; 250 in .338 Win. Magnum; and 286 in 9.3x62.

Have recovered a few, but only from the lighter end of the spectrum (100-140 grain) on severe angling shots. I once shot a muley buck with a 140 from a 7x57 as he faced me at 30 yards in the timber. My wife bit into the expanded bullet the next year--in a round steak from the rear of the rump.

They pretty much do the job, without too much meat damage, even the smaller ones at higher velocities. The best two for minimum meat damage, however, were the 250 .338 and 286 9.3! But they also provide a comfort zone in the 6mm's and .25's....

Great to hear other's experiences. My experiences with whitetails have only been with 85gr. 6mm partitions in a 244 Rem. shot at ranges from 50 to 350 yards, all big Kansas does. The ones shot through the ribs ran anywhere from 20 to 60 yards, no "bang flops". I even had to use my german shorthaired pointer to help find one in the tall CRP grass that did'nt leave much of a blood trail. The only ones that went right down on the spot were those shot near the spine. None of the antelope bucks I've shot with this combo have gone very far but all have been shot further forward in the shoulders. Last year I shot a 400+ lb. cow elk with the 85gr. partition at ~175 yards. It ran around 20 yards, stood about 10 seconds, wobbled and fell over dead. It was a complete pass through the lungs with lots of "jello" inside! The only partition I've recovered over the years was 7mm Rem. mag 160gr. from a big mulie buck shot through the shoulders at about 300 yards. One more story and then I'll shut up. The animal that has gone the farthest after taking a partition was a nice antelope buck shot with my 264 winchester at 425 yards. It ran 60 to 80 yards before falling over and only after hitting a barbed wire fence. That was a 125gr through the bottom of the heart opening up both ventricles! Tough critters those antelope. Summary: In my experience, partitions are effective, reliable, and deadly, but not necessarily dramatic "bangfloppers" for what its worth. They do keep meat in the freezer however!

Buck taken with 100 gr 243 NPT. 105 yds quartering away. Entered just behind last rib-exit just in front of opposite shoulder. Went about 40 yds and piled up.

I dont have as much experience as your folks. Over the years I use exclusively NP from .243, .270 and .308 and 300. Most if not all shots are heart/lung shoots with full penetration. No bullet was ever recovered and I have never lost a deer either. 99% time they ran 20 to 80 yards (never experience a bang flop). One deer was gut shot and ran almost 200 yards.

Like many of you I read stories about how good the TSX bullets are and I have started to convert my NP loads to TSXs. Up to this point I have got half my hunting loads developed but have not used any in the field yet. Now I hear stories about pencil-in/out with the TSXs I am have a second thought about TSXs now. In hindsight, I should have stayed with NP and save my dollars in TSX load development.

Dead is dead and one can never argue with success of NP especially my own experience. Well, I still enough NPs to last the next ten seasons; maybe I just stay with them.
