I have a old late 60s early 70s leupold Vari-X II that I probably destroyed the elevation turret. I ran out of adjustment on a Sako 223 trying to lower the point of aim more than 1.75 high. I guess I tightened too much because I cannot move it now.
I mailed it in today. I'm just curious if they can fix a scope that old.

I just got two back from Leupold. One was a Vari-X II 3-9x40, cleaned and adjusted.

The other was a Vari-X III 2.5-8x36. Evidently they couldn't fix it, sent a new VX-3i-2.5-8x36. Pretty neat C/S.

I sent them a very old 2 3/4X Plainsman, the one with the outside adjuster rings a few years ago. The scope was made in the mid 50's. The went completely through it, fixed a stuck ring, replaced the objective lens; all on warranty-no charge.

Yeah, wonder why they didn't send a VX-2?

Actually, some claim the VX-1 is about as good as the older Vari-X II's, the VX-2 is about as good as the older Vari-X III's.

I have a coupld of VX-2's and I do think they're about as good if not better than older Vari-X III's.

The current VX-1 is better than a Vari-X II.

Have not handled a VX-1, but that makes sense.

So, maybe djp didn't get screwed as bad as he thought.

I was pretty amazed to get a new VX-3i 2.5-8x36 for my Vari-X III 2.5-8x36. To me that's a big upgrade. Maybe they sent the VX-3i because they don't have a VX-2 2.5-8x36. I'd have been happy with a VX-2 2-7x33, which would also have been an upgrade from the older scope.

That stuff all gets written off as a loss anyhow, so it works out alright.

I sent in an older M8 3X a few months back for a reticle change. I got back a brand-new 3X from the custom shop, with the heavy duplex I wanted. Not bad.

I believe this old Vari-X II is a 41mm objective instead of 40.

I have the same M8 3X on a Marlin 1894 44 Rem Mag. I should send mine in for an update.

Just a update. Leupold was able to repair the 45+ year old Vari-X II.

Vapodog: I agree with you 100% on Leupold customer service - its un-surpassed!
And DON'T let any Leupold nay-sayer ever get away with trying to tell you anything different!

I'm very happy with Leupold warranty and their scopes. I've been systematically selling off old scopes and replacing them with Leupold. I sent an old scope in that looked like someone used an air wrench on the elevation and windage adjustments and then drug it behind their safari vehicle for a week. They sent me a new upgrade scope. I didn't even have to pay return shipping I probably own close to 30 Leupold scope now. I'm still buying them. Variables and fixed power.
I just wish I could have afforded to have them all VX3's and FX-3's. I'm actually more interested in fixed power but some rifles seem to be a better fit with variables. 25-06, 7mm RM for instance.

I prefer classic.
