I've had a couple 550's in the past, last one back in the mid seventies...nice solid gun, & since I'm needing a .22 rifle, I think I'm gonna start looking for one...back then, we didn't have all the subsonic ammo, & I was wondering if the 550 might cycle them.

The only one I've shot belonged to a friend. It looked good when he bought it but didn't function on any type ammo dependably.

I don't recall exactly what it involved, maybe just a good cleaning but after spending considerable time fooling with it it worked with anything he shot, including std. velocity LR, shorts and CBs.

I remember him saying it's cool that it could handle all these types of ammo but it was a hassle remembering where they all hit.

I've got a pristine Rem 550-1 that shoots the Rem Sub-Sonic ammo pretty well as I remember. I've also tried standard high velocity and Wolf Target in it and never had any feeding problems. It shoots the Wolf Target into less than 1.75" at 100yds which is good enough for me.

For $157 at a gunshow, I got this mint condition 1951 550-1 in 2-26-2011 from an old guy who got it new when he was a teen ager. He was tall and neat and looked like a doctor or something. Some kind of guy who could own a gun for 60 years and not scratch it.

It cycles CB shorts, but has no scope grooves or holes.

5 years later for $175 at a pawn shot I got this beat up swiss cheese 1957 550-1 on 2-24-2016. It is missing the deflector shield.

I have not shot it yet. Ok $26 and the deflector is on the way from Numrich.

I have one I bought new in the mid 60's,put a Williams peep on it, it is a great shooting rifle. Fits and feels more like a rifle than most 22's. The only semi auto that I would like more is my Dad's old springfield it's little heavier just as long. He gave it to my nephew. I have his 99, my first deer rifle.
