What's the biggest and longest case that will work in a Marlin
action?

Dave Clay once did an experimental 50-110 WCF on a Marlin 1895. However, he could not get it to cycle reliably and has since limited his Marlin 1895 conversions to cartridges based on 348 Win or 50-110 cases with a 2.75" overall cartridge length. The limiting factor is cartridge overall length and the meat left under the barrel threads. So, I think probably the practical limit would be with a 450/348 Improved (2.145" case length, 2.75" COL) or maybe a 50-110 trimmed to around 2.3" with a 2.75" COL accepting .510"-.512" bullets.

Any idea how he got the extra length? Mine won't feed more than 2.56.
I've read of this length before, chased it through threads, went to Mic McPherson's website but in the end I couldn't get hold of the original article.

All of the feed probs can be overcome. I've been down this road of misery. The real problem that there is no way around is barrel diameter at the threads. They left JUST enough and not a smidge more than they had to to get the mag up close. You take so much as wmery cloth to that chamber and she'll split. And the amount it cost to have the whole thing revamped will buy 3-4 ruger #1's which is what I did. Now its going 450 AK and it'll work

Mic McPherson explains the process to achieve cycling of 2.665" rounds in the October 1998 issue of Precision Shooting magazine. The issue is out of print but the publisher will make a copy of the article upon request and a small sum submitted. McPherson will guarantee 2.73" for $250 if he also does other work, see http://www.levergun.com/services.htm

Modifications such as those by Dave Clay are made to the carrier, ejector, bolt face and ejection port to achieve cycling of a 2.75" round. Don't know what he charges. Call or write him at:

I would love to be in the position to farm the work out and simply pay for it when finished. If you check my location, you will see that I am 10,000 miles and many post 9/11 restrictions away from that sort of help.
I haven't heard of anybody closer who can do this specialist work.
Thanks for the information, I will contact Precision Shooting Magazine for the article.

I gave my local gunsmith the McPherson article and my rifle and he wanted to give it a try. I can now cycle up to 2.7" rounds depending on the bullet used.

That would allow me to reliably cycle 250gr projectiles in my .35 Greevy XLR.

I would go with the 450 Alaskan. A 350 grain Speer would seat to the cannelure at 2.735" COL and could be pushed 2325 fps in a 22" barrel. Recoil in a 7 lbs rifle is awesome.

A rechamber would be taking less than 25 thousands of an inch from the chamber wall.

I can no longer recomend David Clay as a smith.
the last thing i sent to him took 14 months to get back and was not up to par. the silver solder job was shotty and the trigger was 5 pounds and not 3 like requested. furthermore the "action job" was not as smooth as he has done on previous rifles of mine.
the next marlin that goes out will likely be sent to Alaska or to Turnbull.
David seems to be preoccupied w/ something and i dont like to wait 14 months after prepaying 1500 bucks for a job.

Half-minute accuracy, while pleasant to observe, is in no way superior to one-minute accuracy in any serious rifle.
