Thank you, Patrick.

Your usual kindness is appreciated Dan but I need a zoom for a Nikon d3300 that would reach to shoreline from a cruise ship.

Mounted on a DX camera like that, at max zoom of 500mm, it's roughly equivalent to a 14x scope

Back to the real technical Sheitte. I just cleaned my 270 Kimber Montana, this after 60 or so rounds since purchased used here on the 'fire. A bit of load development prior to last falls elk hunt, maybe 30 - 40 rounds as I used Sammo's suggested load with the 140 TSX. Easy sub-1 incher and the majority closing in on 1/2". Of course I was "only" shooting multiples of three shot groups so who knows... I chased elk with it in Colorado and throttled a decent bull at just shy of 250 yards. Last week I head shot three hogs out to 150 yards, barrel uncleaned, scoped not confirmed. Today I cleaned the mud off of the rifle and the bore for the first time. Six patches of Sweets and I was done. A very good barrel indeed. This rifle ain't going anywhere. smile

I can sell all I own and stick with the Kimber 270 and my tweaked SS M70 375 H&H and sell the rest and be good for life. So what's with this new #1 I heard you have acquired? grin

You mean the reason why I don't have the above-mentioned Nikon 200-500 zoom lens? smile

Yes, a .38-55 #1, thanks to your help smile I believe Ingwe and 7x57Steve are familiar with them. grin

#1 Trivia, that's the largest bore in any of the "B" barrel contours - so probably one of the lightest 26" barreled #1's.

Relatively uncommon, somewhere between 275 and 350 were made for a distributor in 1989. Those who have actually shot them report they shoot very well. Not as rare as my .475 Turnbull, but somewhat more appropriate for Texas deer grin

I ordered brass, bullets and dies for it this morning. Not sure if I will scope it or not.

I have never handled a #1 that felt so right.

The .475 Turnbull was made in less than 100 #1's, according to Turnbull. It's a 26" C weight barrel. With scope mine weighs 9lbs 2 oz. The cartridge has 95% of the .458 WM's capacity...

So without the scope it's more or less a 7½ lb .470 Nitro. It is very handy, and the most accurate big bore I have ever shot. grin

Does the .444 qualify as a big bore?
