I'm thinking of buying a Steyr Scout in 308, but have a question. I know that they used to come with a hard plastic buttplate but have since heard that they now come with a soft rubber one. In the old days, it wouldn't have made a difference, but I have pins, a screw and arthritis in my right shoulder. There's no local shops that carry them, so does anyone have any experience with them. Is it like a Limbsaver or just hard rubber?

I've got a recent production Scout. I would call it a hard rubber; there's some give but definitely not as soft as a Limbsaver. I like it, but I'm not (yet) carrying any extra hardware in my shoulder.

I got one of the newer soft pads as a replacement on my Prohunter 7mm Rem Mag. It is more of a hard rubber than a limbsaver. If you don't need the shortest LOP, you could try removing all the spacers and adding a limbsaver slip-on. That's what I do when shooting from the bench.
