Doing some load work up on a new rifle. .280 Ackley. Several good loads and break in work later an interesting pattern has emerged. There will usually be two tight groups mostly within a 1" of the other group. They seem to be one above the other. Often I will get three shots tight and one 1" above. This is about 100% of the time.

Could be the scope losing zero after a few shots or the barrel could be heating up and making contact some where on the stock.

How many rounds before the shift? Is it always a 1moa shift?
What kind of groups are you getting overall?
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.

Retorqued the stock screws?
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Remounted and re-torqued Everything. Used slightly higher values. 22 Ips on the rings 25 Ips on the base. Seems to have taken care of it. Maybe I smashed the gremlin.

One last thing to watch is the screw length. If they bottom out, it can amount to a loose base, cause weird barrel harmonics and bolt pressure.

One more thing that I found. I could flex the barrel with a good grip and it touched the barrel channel. Took the rasp to that and torqued to 55 inch lbs. Barsness reminded me if it will touch with hand pressure it might during recoil. I also saw a shining line down the back wall of the rear pillar. I think the screw was making contact, reamed that out also. No more flyers or two groups. The groups 5 shot are right around an 1" and in a group. Three shot groups are sometimes real tight. But the damn 4th and 5th shots usually open it up. The kid will have to live with it.
