Which Match King do you recommend in the 7mm Rem Mag for a long range deer load? I am just starting load development for a 24 inch, #4 contour, Pac-Nor on a 700 action in the McMillan hunter stock. I have a B&L 6X24 on top of this rig and I want to use it at those deer stands where I can see the entire ranch. I know you like the Match Kings, any advice for this caliber?

If you are set on MK's.The 168 would be the way to go...My 7mm STW is the only one of my gun's I don't shoot MK's in.......I shoot the 162 A-Max in a 9.5 twist and they shoot VERY well.I have some load data on a Savage 110 7Mag with the A-Max.....I'll try to find it...

My rifle is set up with a 10 twist. I would appericate your load data. I have not used the A max, how do they perform?

Boyd,

I was out this past Sunday verifying my "come ups" on my 300 win mag, using 180gr ballistic tips. I shot at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 700 yards. My worst shot was at 400 yards - 2" low. I was shooting off the bench you used when you where chuck hunting here. I was in the "condo".

I wish you well next week - for deer - and if I don't see you again, have a wonderfull Thanksgiving.

Have a good one,

Don

PDS

I'm sure you can't match up the rifle you mentioned to mine as per the loading, but it may be close.
The load I use in my 7mm mag with a 30"----- 9 1/4 twist Hart barrel is-----77 to 80 grs of WC872 (like H870) and the 168 Gr Sierra MK or 69 or 70 Grs of H4831
with the 168 gr MK. The 4831 load is a real good one for LR hunting. A flat shooting load.

You will not get the velocity I get from mine since you have a 26" barrel, but maybe some of these loads will work for you anyway.

They work in MY rifle and I take NO responsibility for anyone else's rifle if these loads are used.

DC

Thanks for the information. I brought home a bottle of H4831 yesterday. I think I will try it with the 168 gr. MatchKings. How does that bullet perform for you on game? Do I remember correctly that some of you long range guys use them on elk?

I am still in the break in phase with this barrel but I got a five shot group just under 3/4 inch with IMR 4831 and 120gr. Nosler BT's. the last time out. I believe the barrel is going to be a keeper after I finish break in and find a load for it. I like the way BT's perform on our little deer but have never found them to be as accurate as Sierra bullets, especially the Match Kings. I use the 70gr. MK in .243 and the 52gr.MK in the .222 for prairie dogs and have not found them lacking for expansion.

To date all my long range shooting has been done with a 25-06 Sendero and 100gr. Sierra gamekings. This new rifle is to be my mule deer / elk rifle.

PDS

The experiance I have had with Match Kings have been VERY positive on game up to and including elk.

I will admit, the bore diameter was bigger though on most of them. I used the large 30 cal mags like the 30/378 with 200 and 220 gr MKs and the 338 300 gr in my 338/416 Rugby Imp on most of them.

About 13 yrs ago I did get an elk with my 7mm/300 Weatherby with 168 gr Match kings coming out of that barrel at 3250 fps. I still take that rifle with me to Colorado as a carry rifle. At 10 Lbs and a 29 1/2" barrel it still shoots very well.

I always got good expansion at longrange with the MK bullets on thin skinned big game such as Whitetail and Mule deer and elk. They always held together and NEVER blew up on a shoulder. They always penitrated at least ONE shoulder and most times both when hit in that area.

I think you will be happy with your choice of the 7mm Mag for deer and an occasional elk using the 168 gr Match King.

Later and good hunting.
Darryl Cassel
