Hey fellas,
I have a shot at a like new sako 75 grey wolf 260 rem, which I believe has 1:9 twist. Any complaints with the rifle or twist? I've heard nothing but good about sako. Looking to shoot 130 grain and less bullets.

The Sako Varmint w/ set trigger and the 260 Rem. are a great combo IMHO.

What would be a good price on this rifle? 100 rounds through it, comes with 5 boxes of ammo ( federal and remington), sling, rings and 2 mags.

M85 grey wolf is about 1500 new. M75 is actually preferred by some for the ejector positioning. So in some way they (75 or 85) have the same value to most guys. Mags are 125 on a good day, ammo probably the same, and optilock rings about the same again. So some inflated math would start at 1800, so I would say 1200 would be an interesting number. I have 75s and 85s, and I don't really see the difference. Their value would be the same to me. I bought a couple 85s for 1100-1200 the last few years and I thought I did well. I also bought new ones 10% under MSRP and I think it was money well spent. Next rifle will be a varmint in 223. I just checked the dealer today and they did not have any in stock.

Thanks for the input. Agreed to purchase tonight. I'm wondering how to determine what twist it actually has.. lots of info on web says 1:9, though the Sako site clearly states 1:8.

Don't worry about the 1-8 vs 1-9. The 1-9 will handle any bullet you plan to shoot, even the high BC 140 Berger VLDs.

Mine shot 130-142's fine. First 2 shots of 3 in 1-hole @200 yds
W 130AB's. Several times...

Here is how i do it.


I take a cleaning rod and either a tight patch or a bronze bore brush with a patch wrapped around it and start it in the bore. You can either measure the in-stroke, out-stroke or both.
I always use a bore-guide so one needs a longer rod. You can push the rod 14 to 15 inches into the barrel. Take a piece of tape and wrap around the rod with a tab sticking out and push it until it just makes contact with the bore guide. Pull the rod out until the tab makes one complete revolution from the starting point. Take a measure and measure the distance from the end of the bore guide to the tape. That should give you a good approximation of your twist rate. One revolution in "x" inches.

I have a 75 Hunter Stainless in .260 and it is a 1/9 twist....Says it on the barrel. I bought it new as a closeout when the 85s were coming out for $950. It's my favorite hunting rifle and performs flawlessly. In fact, it's just as accurate as some of my custom barrels.

If there is any complaint, it's that the barrel seems slow to me. With max charge of IMR4350 behind a Nosler 120 gr BT, I'm only getting 2740 fps.

To conclude, buy it and enjoy. You won't regret it.

Well, deal has been made, should take posession the end of this next week. I'll work up some reloads, try the factory ammo its coming with and report back.

I use IMR4350 specifically behind a 120 gr Nosler BT. My load is over book max which gives me 2740 fps. This barrel has a long throat which is why I get lower velocity. However, I have a Nikon UCC Monarch BDC on it and the BDCs are a guarantee if the scope is set on 8x. My father in law couldn't believe the shots on steel at 400 yards.

I have a NIB Sako 75 Finnlight in 260, doesn't say anything about twist on the box. I better scope her up and give her a shake down cruise by the reports on this post!

H4350 can give up to 75 fps over IMR
What's your charge?

My charge is 45.0 gr of IMR 4350. I don't recommend anyone try this charge without working up to it.

Seems I used about that amount - perhaps a grain less w 130's.
That said you might try H to see if you get 2800+

I had a M96 Swede pushing 120CL yrs ago 2830 w H4831. In a chopped 21" w fast twist IIRC 1 in 7.5"

Well, picked it up today. Barrel and action show little wear, trigger is crisp, parts of stock look as though a blind monkey drug it through a barb wire land mine field. Pictures werent the best, so it's always a gamble. Might need a McMillan...see how she shoots first. What's a good lightweight ring option? Talley make a 1 piece for sako 75?
