My son (age 11, soon to be 12) wants a semi-auto .22 for Christmas. I'm thinking about a Remington Model 552 SpeedMaster.
Does anyone have any experience with this rifle? Is it a better choice than a Ruger 10/22?
Thanks,
Mike

I wouldn't think so. The Remington rifle is a full size gun. The 10/22 carbine has a shorter LOP. The Remington loads/unloads from the tube magazine and requires more manipulation to operate. Plus some added attention to ensure the tube magazine is completely empty. The magazine of the 10/22 will be easier to clear the gun. Are you sure you want to hand a 12 year old a semi-auto? Personally, I'd be absolutely certain to maintain a good "eye" on the little guy while out shooting.

Thanks for the advice and insight. He has been using my nylon 66 with pretty close supervision from myself and his older brother. We do quite a bit of plinking, but neither he or my older son go out shooting without me.
Your point about easily clearing the gun is well taken, I hadn't thought of that aspect. I think I'll get the ruger 10/22.
Thanks again, Mike

Thanks again, Mike \ The trigger on a new 10-22 will be heavy... It'll need fixing. Don

That's an easy fix on the 10/22. Drop in a new target hammer from Power, Clark, or VQ and it's done. The Remington will require more traditional gunsmithing to acheive the same results. The 10/22 can be customized as the boy grows and his interest change, ect. Stocks and barrels swap easy as you please. Resale most likely would be higher with the 10/22. The Speedmaster will always be the Speedmaster. Now that isn't neccesarily a bad thing, just that young people like new and flashy stuff and the 10/22 can certainly accomadate those wants easily enough. I actually like the Speedmaster, I just think the 10/22 would be a better pick for a youngster.

Ruger is now making a 10/22 youth model with a shorter length of pull, and a 16.5" barrel. Should be a great kids / wife rifle. Virgil B.
