Why are Lyman's so much more expensive than Hornady's?

Last I heard Hornady made them. But who knows? Greed is the most likely reason.

I believe that the Hornady's are crimp on and the Lyman use an adhesive. memtb

Don't know but skip them and buy the crimp on Hornady ones. I was given a bunch of the Lymans and they don't want to stay on some bullets from some molds, the Hornadys have always stayed put after a trip through the sizer.

No.

Old Lyman checks often didn't crimp in place as well as Hornady's version, so some guys would super glue them in place.

Personally I've had several boxes of Lyman checks but never found them any better (and usually not as good) as Hornady, and Lyman's pricing these days seems to be based on name only.

John Barlow who started Ideal is credited with inventing the gas check about 1903-1904. From the reading I've done about gas checks they were intended to fall off after exiting the muzzle. I started shooting gas checked bullets in the late 1970's with Lyman slip on gas checks. And yes sometimes they did fall off and sometimes not. I'd find them in the backstop. The ones that did fall off did not fall off uniformly. I'd find some to the left and some to the right of the muzzle, some 5 feet and some as much as 20 feet ahead of the muzzle. I switched to the Hornady crimp on gas checks and have been happier ever since. Don't know when Lyman started selling the crimp on style but the ones I have are the same dimensionaly as Hornady. What I have never been able understand is why they cost as much or more than primers. It is a lot simpler manufacturing process with just one piece while primers are three piece with the priming compound being a complex item and some hazzard in handling.

Old Lyman checks didn't attach like the present Hornady's.

That said, if Lyman checks are even made presently, they are now pretty much made by Hornady.

Sorry, but I don't know exactly when it happened, but Hornady makes or made the last iteration of Lyman gas checks.
