How do you re cock the bolt on a rem 788? followed instructions manual and couldn't make it work, the rifle works good but after bore sighting I made the mistake of holding trigger back while putting bolt back in.

Working the bolt as if you were reloading should recock the striker. If not you probably have a gummed up or otherwise sticking trigger that isn't catching and holding the sear.
