Trump Likely to Break GOP-vote Record for All-Time
By KYLE CHENEY

With his five blowout wins Tuesday night, Donald Trump has passed Mitt Romney’s popular vote total from four years ago and is on a trajectory that could land him more Republican votes than any presidential candidate in modern history – by a lot.

Trump surged to 9.9 million votes, according to totals that include Tuesday’s preliminary results across the northeast and could rise further as the final votes are counted. That’s already more than 100,000 more than Romney earned in the entire 2012 primary season and tens of thousands more than John McCain earnedin 2008.

Trump is certain to pass McCain’s total next week in Indiana, but more importantly, he’s positioned to easily pass the modern record-holder George W. Bush — who collected 10.8 million votes in 2000.

That presents an uncomfortable reality for anti-Trump forces: they’re attempting to thwart the candidate who is likely to win more Republican primary votes than any GOP contender in at least the last 36 years, and maybe ever.

In an email to POLITICO, University of Minnesota political science professor (and Smart Politics blogger) Eric Ostermeier noted that only eight candidates have won more than 7.5 million Republican primary votes since the advent of the modern primary and caucus system. Ronald Reagan won about 7.7 million votes in 1980, the fewest other than George W. Bush’s 7.6 million in 2004, when he didn’t face a primary challenge.

George H. W. Bush clocked in at 8.2 million votes in 1988 and 9.2 million in 1992, while Bob Dole earned 8.4 million in 1996.

I haven't been following this much and I just plain don't get it. How can Trump win in one state with 71 delegates and only get 17 of them? And another state with 19 and only get 9 ?
I know he says the system is corrupt and screwed up....duh....

Because his absolute no-schitt never-to-be-broken don't-even-think-about-it ceiling is 25%, right?

Good.

If he wins it outright, maybe people will stop crying about arcane caucus systems that have been in place longer than most people here have been alive.

Then, they could focus their efforts into the general, and all their wasted whining into changing the primary systems in states they aren't residents in.

Yes, I guess the best thing about not having cable TV is not being bombarded by media rhetoric trying to sell the latest story line, don't listen to radio shock jocks. I've even come to using a filter here where I balance my opinion with others.

I don't get being emotionally upset every three day cycle over what media thinks is the latest hullabaloo.

...in a perfect world, nada . Then again, when you have a concentrated effort by the party elites to thwart a majority, we get what we got instead.
The majority was thwarted by the large number of hopefuls on the stage spreading the vote out between them until quite recently. Now I know you Trumpians will not agree but had there been 5 or 6 starting out, I doubt Trump would even be in it by now.

You guys, really??
Three months ago any #nevertrump people[not just Cruz folks] were stating how once the field narrowed Trump was done, finished, kaput. 35% was his ceiling no matter how many candidates were in. Doesn't seem like that is what happened.

The same way he can get 45% of the votes in Florida and gets 100% of the delegates.

Reagan won 525 electoral votes to 13 for Mondale in '84 by winning 49 states to 1.

Or get 43% of the votes and become president.

Looks like another Texan was working for the Dems in that election.

For the first time, I really believe she's NOT gonna get in..

Mainly due to this: I think the Bernsies will NOT automatically go to TFP when he drops out. The majority of the Bernsies just HATE TFP, and they might very well slide over to DT (assuming he's the candidate). There's a LOT of Bernsies - and moving most of those against her via the GOP entry means she's absolutely TOAST..

That - and the fact that DT's got balls, and will go after her with a ferocity she cannot match - nor will her record in gov't help her one teeny bit.

And with the FBI breathing down her neck, I think she's gonna have a very BAD year..

I don't think so. Democrats vote Democrat no matter what or who. Satin himself could run as a (D) and get the Democrat vote.

That said, the Bernie supporters are Socialists and hate Trump way more than Hillary.

To the Bernie babies, Trump is what is wrong with this country, an evil rich businessman that has taken from the poor and given to himself.

Trump campaigns on bringing jobs and growth back to America. Bernie Babies do not want jobs and do not what to work to be successful, they just want free stuff and for the Government to take care of them.

...and if they can't have Bernie, they will without a doubt take Hillary as they know that free stuff and increased welfare comes from the Democrat party, not the Evil Businessman.

Trumps votes in NY primary 1/2 Million, Sanders 3/4 of a million,Hillary 1 1/2 million votes

Keep fooling yourselves thinking Trump will bring more new voters than Dems can keep up with

Last hope is Hillary gets indicted

The Dem primary vote this year is down 20%.

Trump has far many more total popular votes than Clinton, by a huge percentage.

It's about swing states, always is. 2012 the difference in all swing states combined was less than 1 million votes. Florida itself was 74,309, .88%.

Guys be honest stop the spin,Cruz had 2 votes in NY one was mine. That just makes the argument even worse for the Republicans. The Dems will vote in the general the republicans will be butt hurt whether Trumpers or Cruzers or the anyone but Trumpers. Turn out will not be record setting in the general as in the primary race
Trumps starting with dumb comments already the Hillary woman comment yesterday was stupid and detrimental, but that's Trump he'll just roll with his 30-35% and remain there

F the popular vote.

Are we going to end up tossing the electoral college this year for Trump?

Add that the Bern has brought out many, many new voters and they are still down. And while the MSM is skirting this issue the Bern voters and HRC voters are fighting just as much if not more than the Cruz/Trump people. It's not all sunshine and lolipops in DNC land irregardless of how much DWS says it is.

You fail to see the effect of a closed state primary. With a closed primary more truth can be found in the writings on a restroom wall.

The end of democracy, and the defeat of the American Revolution will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations.
