One of the rarer versions of the Mauser 98 action is the G33/40, an intermediate-length small ring action that was only made for about 3 years. It had various lightening cuts and a hollow bolt handle, and was intended for mountain troops. Because of its trim dimensions, it has been sought after for custom projects. This rifle is in 6 MM Rem, and was made by Maynard Lambert, a regionally well- known gunsmith in the west in the 1960-70s, who died in 2007. This is quite a competently carried out light hunting rifle; the wrap-around checkering on both the grip and forend is a particularly nice touch. The wood is not flashy, but the layout is very nice, with good grain flow through the grip. When the barreled action is out of the stock, it is easy to see that the inletting is all hand cut. The Redfield is over-sized for the little rifle, but it is nice for testing loads. Even with the scope on board the weight is 8.1 lb; 22" barrel with a 1-10 twist. The grip cap and butt plate are both metal. These photos do not show it, but the stock has a fair bit of cast-off, as well. All in all, a pretty darn good example of custom rifle craftsmanship.

Beauty!
An old pal had a Maynard Lampert 7x57 Mauser that he hunted with every where. He made nice rifles.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

You no doubt know more about them than I; this is the first one I have had pass through my hands. I have heard of '06 based cases being used in them, so I am sure your are right.

You probably just got it mixed up with a Mex...:)
Been dinking with one of its forefathers, a VZ33, in a 6.5-284. I enjoy looking at the old builds--appreciate it.

Wowza!
Dober just picked up a custom G33/40 in 6mm Rem as well... for around $500. Somehow or other I missed it...

Beautiful rifle buddy. Not expecting this from you though, being a right handed rifle and all..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Probably will not mean much to you but I think that is a very nice slice of class.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

utah708; Good evening to you sir, I trust this finds you well.
Thanks for sharing the photos of that grand custom rifle. It's a truly timeless piece in my view, from the wood, the checkering and the entire package really.
All the best to you and yours this spring and thanks again.
Dwayne

Nice rifle and wonderful chambering!!! I've posted mine (7X57 Mauser) here before. How about you and I see about getting these two together and throw a litter of Cache Valley G33/40 "pups"... maybe 6.5X55???
