David, find a AR57 upper . good to 200yds on the squirrels here on the ranch. if you get bored with that slap on your .223 upper and send em into the air.

Our local WM has the Marlin XT-17VR for around $210. I don't care for the stock and would swap to a Marlin 917 series take-off or a Boyds Rimfire Hunter, but I think that you get a lot of potential accuracy for the $$.

I've got 2 Savage's/ One sporter barrel, and the other a bull barrel.
Both are very accurate. Only issue is on the bull barrel. For some reason it does not like feeding hollow points. Maybe a ramp job is in order.
But for accuracy, they're both great shooters.
I think that just about any rifle in 17 hmr would probably serve your needs.
