If you were to build a whitetail rifle (mid-south) no huge bodied deer here. Top end around 225-250. Average less than that. Shots anywhere from 10 yards-??
Starting with a Stainless Model 7 reciever (older 3 screw), give me your ideas on caliber, barrel length, contour, stock, etc.
Keeping in mind you want to keep lite weight and a "Mobil" huntin rig and not a heavier stand gun. You load your own and want to utilize the max length for said cartridge if necessary.
Looking forward to your ideas.

6mm/6.5 Creedmoor or .22-250 take your pick with a 1:8 twist barrel if you want a large selection of bullets to choose from. .250 Savage if you want a classic white tail cartridge. FWT to #2 contour 22" max length barrel, would be pretty happy with a 20" in all cartridges mentioned.

The one I have is 7mm08 but the barrel was cut to 19" because there was a bulge 1/2" back from the muzzle

7-08, twist it 8", #2 PAC Nor, short shank finished at 22". Edge.

Done.

Any of these suggested would be fine. I'd do up a 6x47L fast twisted in a Rock #2 cut to 22". Keep the shank pretty short as suggested - maybe 1" from action face. Send a few dummy rounds with bullet of your choice seated to a decent length for proper throat. I believe mine came out to 2.6" or so with 105 Amax.

Manners EH or McEdge of your choice. Specify shank length when you order.

Other than mine already being a 7mm08, I have considered the 260.But that could change. This may wind up being a game changer. Keepem coming folks.

I'm waiting on a stock. I wanted to build a do all white-tail rifle. I've settled with a Stiller Tac30, mullerworks 8twist #3 barrel finished at 22", timney trigger, mcbros edge (mountaineer)....should be awesome. Can't wait.

Something like a Model 7 in 250 Savage.

I am going to be different. .243 Win, M7 SS take off barrel @ 20". McMillan edge filled stock of your choice. Picture of my LH SA 700 set up as such. Weighs right at 8lbs as shown with a standard fill McM M7 stock. If I were to build it again today, only thing I would change would be an Edge filled McM Mountaineer stock in lieu of the standard fill M7 stock.

I run 95gr Nosler Partitions. No issue with KY WT's. Can't imagine it would not work down your way as well...

d500lnn, sounds nice. I've got similar components here being Tac30 action, #3 Lilja 8 twist 7mm barrel, Timney Calvin Elite trigger, Edge filled Game Scout with DBM.
Similar purpose to the OP except fallow instead of whitetail.
I've been agonizing between .284 win and 7mm-08 but the more I look at the numbers the more I'm leaning toward 7mm-08.

I would go 6 or 6.5 cm to get the most out of the mag box. Probably a 700 sportier factory dupe at 22". In a edge or mountain rifle edge depending on your preference.
