Just went out with the wife and dogs and I hear a bunch of yelling just over the hill.

Slide out there and what do I find, 3 boys about 12-14 years old, up to their knees in the beaver pond with a dip net. They crossed over from the other side and were sloshing around and dip netting crawfish.

They looked up and I said 'Just checking to see what the noise was.' The lead boy said 'yes sir, we were just dip netting some crawfish to go fishing'

I asked, 'Did you get many' he replied 'Yes sir, a bucket full'. I told them to be careful of the snakes and walked back to the house.

Gotta love boys being boys.

Good to see boys that age can do something other than video games.

Glad to hear the way you handled that situation. They probably wouldn't have minded if you waded right in and helped. That was fun a long time ago, bet it still is.

After killing a 3' copperhead today, they can have at it. That said, it would be a hoot.

Cool. Nice to know old retired guys aren't all a bunch of grumps. grin

I remember catching crawdads, frogs and mud puppies when I was a tadpole.

I feel like you should have a least shaken your fist at them.

I grew up in a time when the whole neighborhood was like that. Some boys were cutting up my yard with a go cart once and I know that my son was in with them. I told my wife we were all about raising boys, not grass. They learned to respect people's yards that were raising grass, but had a great time on those yards that weren't…

Watching boys be boys brings back fond childhood memories, it also bring about damn good belly chuckles now and then.

Or mention "ask next time"...



In a couple spots it's a non-stop deal around here but for the most part the locals are just being 'locals'...



Be nice and the good ones will help keep an eye out for you.

Dad's farm was a superhighway in the spring for Copperheads leaving the bluff dens heading out to farms.

Back then I could make a belt out of a 36" one.

In today's world, if one of them was bitten by a snake, or even twisted an ankle for that matter, you might be hearing from their parent's lawyer. Just sayin'.

Not if it was my kid - or now, grandkid.

Should have chewed their butts out and told them to come in by the house next time but stop and ask first

Depends entirely upon the state. If you have to ask, you're in the wrong state.

People not afraid of the world understand things like this.

Guess there still are some decent people in the world.



Trespassers are one thing but a couple polite young boys just enjoying the outdoors is another.

Them boys are technically "trespassing". However, technicalities have different meanings at that age, and by folks that understand what life is supposed to be at that.

Provided a little 'fear' is installed on the 'trepasser'.

Totally depends on the situation.

Thinkin' the snake reference for said effect.
