So what does it take to bring down an angry gorilla?
17HMR to the head? Or an'06 to center mass?
I could wish a lot of things on my worst enemy but neuropathy ain't one of them.

I seem to remember Papa Hemingway alluding to a certain hunter who shot gorillas in one of his stories. Actually I think the short story was about boxing. Been a while since I read it. I remember him also mentioning going to A&F to buy a Colt Woodsman in the same story.

I was wondering that myself, with the news report of the zoo employee shooting it.
Got me to thinking it was probably a pretty substantial caliber. I mean, it might not be a 400lb gorilla they had to deal with. It could be up to rhino, hippo, or even elephant sized threats.

Can't speak for the Cincinnati Zoo, but our Riverbanks Zoo here in Columbia keeps a CZ .458 Win, a Whitworth .375 and a Winchester .338 Win on hand for "emergencies" . The keepers who work with the big animals must qualify with them every year. They buy the ammo from us (gun shop) and they bring me a big bag of the fired brass when they're done. We actually sold two CZs in .505 Gibbs to a large zoo up North several years ago.

Since the other post about the African calibers, that may be. I think I would opt for a short range 12 ga with slugs or buck. I feel for the zoo person who had to do the job, I would not want to have to do that.

What value does a caged gorilla really have?...it has no trophy value which would provide money to local communities, it ain't going to end up on a wall, and it ain't going to feed hungry villagers.
This Walt Disneyesque ideology about animals is rediculous
It is what it is a an unfortunate incident that could have ended up with the zoo paying out millions over a dead child I'd call the dead monkey a wash

The value of an animal that is one of only several hundred in existence is increased by its rarity. I heard a conservative value of a million dollars. The gorilla actually earns money through attendance not to mention the other hard costs of permits and acquisition.

The zoos actually pay lots of money for those animals and male gorillas are a pretty rare and hit commodity. The kid should have had his ass beaten before it got to that point. Apparently, he had been talking bout jumping in the water well before he slipped through about three fences and did it.

First and foremost, the parents should have been watching him. Second, a child should not be able to defeat the barrier. Third, once the ape had the kid, there is no way of knowing what he would do. Hit him with a tranquilizer and chance that it might piss him off? Nobody wants to see a 4 year old ripped in half. Nope, drop him NOW. Whatever happened, the kid is a higher priority than the ape.

The kraut officers used a 9MM Luger. They would haze the gorillas into making them charge and then head shoot them.

What about the responsibility of the zoo to have barriers that a young child can't pass through?

I sure hope they don't let the big ape go to waste. Have it stuffed, complete with small boy dangled by his ankle and displayed at the zoo. It would be a great example for the children.

What about the responsibility of the zoo to have barriers that a young child can't pass through? There was a guy on another board who was familiar with the zoo who said that the kid must have been very determined to get in there and had to go through, around, and over something like three different barriers.

That was my first thought upon hearing about this. What kind of a piss-poor excuse for a barrier was that which would allow a little kid to get in there?

Barriers probably erected for children of a reasoning age.
Little children would be watched after by their parents.
Parents screwed up and altered the calculus of what they prepared for by being so incompetent.

The zoo had 3 barriers that were effective for something like 38 years and millions upon millions of visitors. However if even one kid can figure a way around it the barrier needs to be improved. The zoo acted correctly in my opinion, the parents not so much.

Another woman tried for several minutes to stop the kid from going over the fence and to come back inside the railing while his negligent mom was completely oblivious.
This is the kind of kid who runs around raising holy hell in a public space while his otherwise oblivious parents occasionally look in his direction with an admiring smile.

The parents of the year. Gotta be photoshopped. No way they could have known who the kids father was....

What is Darwin's view on this???
...would he would recommend feeding the parents to the lions.
If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

Amusing as this thread has been, it is very likely the parents are still on their knees thanking God that the zoo staff shot the gorilla.
If they are not then they damn well should be.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

There was a guy over on AR who was a cop that killed a loose gorilla with his double. Can't remember the caliber.

......Whatever happened, the kid is a higher priority than the ape. A kid dumb enough to go thru multiple barriers to get to a large ape should probably be culled from the herd to stop the stupid gene from spreading to future generations. I don't particularly have a fondness for apes but it's annoying some dumb kid with obviously dumber parents gets an ape who was minding his own business shot.

I read an account yesterday where eyewitnesses told them the 4 yr old had been threatening his parents to climb over. They were warned.
My boys at four had enough skills to climb a fence and about everything else. The parents are at fault.
I for one see value in the ape as there are very few of them around. On the other had there seems to be more than enough of these "good little boys". The loss of this child would have been a terrible loss to the family, however they might pay better attention to the rest of their children and dole out some discipline after. Had the boy been spanked more often he wouldn't have been acting like a primate himself.

Yeah, the gene-pool obviously needs a good dose of chlorine.

I'm one of those people that has lost track of my child a time or two. I don't know any (honest) parent that hasn't had that type of minor panic attack.
I also know if raccoons or my kids want to access something, they'll access it. I don't care what you build around it.
And I know I don't give a fugk about a big monkey getting shot.
Last but not least, I've hated zoos and SeaWorld type establishments since I was a child. If you want to see an elephant, buy a fugking plane ticket.
Go Trump.

Curious if this was a "lost track of child" issue, or a "hold him over the barrier so he can get a better look" issue.

I could care less about the Gorilla, but I wanna know as soon as they open Baboon season. I could shoot out several barrels on a good baboon colony in an afternoon and not even care.
Screw you! I'm voting for Trump again!

Curious if this was a "lost track of child" issue, or a "hold him over the barrier so he can get a better look" issue. I saw an Asian man dangling a 3 year old over the alligator pit at the L.A. zoo. I couldn't believe it. The pit was only 6' lower than the rail. And I mean leaning over the rail and dangling the kid. I didn't know if the 'gators had the learned behavior of leaping up to snatch treats from handlers but that was my first thought.

Funny, in that initially, folks were making this a "black lives matter" issue, until they found that and ape was killed to protect a black kid.
