I drew a Colorado Ranching for Wildlife Blue Sage Cow tag and an area 3 Pronghorn Buck tag. I will use the 257 Wby for the Pronghorn and a 264 Win. Mag for the Cow. Happy Days are here again.

Drew 4th season bull tag which enables me to still get an OTC antlerless archery tag!

1st season cow tag and 3rd season mule deer tag
Then STFU. The rest of your statement is superflous bullshit with no real bearing on this discussion other than to massage your own ego. Suckin' on my titties like you wanted me.

Rebelman, Area 3 is where all the big bucks hang out. If that would have been your area of choice, I would have directed you to them. That is where my wife and I always apply for as first choice.

Not first rifle, the schedule only allowed for 3rd rifle. Last year it would have been a slam dunk with 17 points. This year, I barely got in with 19 points. I had considered archery and muzzy, but I would have been one and two points short this year, so maybe it is good that other states have me occupied during September/October. Our Raghorn Express will be headed to the Uncompahgre, come November.

Looks like I'll be hunting with a OTC bull tag and a second choice Unit 12/23/24 cow tag this year. Got a pref point first choice so now have 2 for elk.
Got a pref point for deer instead of a tag so now 2 for deer as well.
Haven't checked with them but expect the other three hunters in my group this year (Daughter #1 and two sons-in-law) also got their first choice pref point for elk and second choice cow tag for Unit 12/23/24.

You will enjoy Third season. I hunted second season two years ago and shot a nice bull. It's not too far from where I live. BigFin,

Smokepole, hunting a bear in 61? Yep, nice photo, I saw a couple bruisers up there when I hunted it a few years ago. Any and all tips are welcomed. What elevation were you seeing them at in October?

Smokepole,
I would look in the oakbrush and creek bottoms around 7500-8000' It kind of depends on how much frost they have had, I think they'll be close to green stuff or leftover acorns.

I was poking around the CPW website for bear data in 61 last year and found a map of the bear harvests. The kill locations were widely distributed. It was hard to get too far from a place where a bear had not been taken. I recall there were a couple of pockets in the SW part of the unit where there was thicker concentrations of bear kills.

I have been doing the same thing for about 10 years now. Drew a cow tag first rifle 23/24 and bought an OTC either sex archery tag for 421.
Two elk tags for $100 isn't a bad deal, I don't see how you foreigners do it for $400 to $600 but there seems to be a lot of you up there in October. 😀

I drew a 25 archery non-resident mule deer tag, but may return it as I don't think that is the area we will be hunting OTC archery elk in now. First trip out.

My buddy and I drew Unit 54 Cow tags. It'll be our first time elk hunting too. Heard it's rough country but we're looking forward to heading into West Elk Wilderness area, maybe up the West Elk Creek Gorge. Any tips would be much appreciated.

FYI – CO is having issues getting their tags out. I got drawn for a cow tag (1st choice) and received a refund check for my second choice (bull) but no tag. I confirmed my drawn result online and finally called yesterday. The girl at DNR confirmed they were having some tag processing issues and my tag should be received by the end of the month – something to do with lost mail claims and reissue of lost license ????
Just FYI for those anxiously checking their post boxes like I have been.

In case my initial post wasn't clear. It was explained most elk tags were delayed and not to call until the end of the month if I still hadn't received mine. The DNR gal said they had been receiving LOTS of calls. It would have been prudent for CO post something on their website or sent notice to hunters to avoid confusion.

Got my refund last week. The first time in my life I haven't had a 61 or 62 third rifle tag. Can't say I'm very disappointed. Both areas have been really rough hunting for the last three or four years.
