What are the odds? The pilot of the Tbird is fine. Preliminary reports are that the Blue Angel pilot did not make it out.

That's what they are saying.

RIP, pilot.

F16 ejection seats are well tested, no surprise it worked given all the R&D from the various fighter-turned-lawndart incidents.

If you do a search the Blue Angels' pilot's name is already out there. It was released to the press by an unofficial "Navy spokesman" who wanted to remain anonymous, i.e. it was probably someone from the squadron or close to the team.

That also means it was probably released to the press and was on the news before the family was notified (wife and young kids). mad

I've seen this go really badly. In one case some squadron wives got the wrong pilot's name and showed up at the "widow's" house to console her. It turned out that one of the "consolers" was actually the new widow. It got REALLY ugly.

In another case a guy in the squadron knew that everyone would have heard about the crash so he called his wife to let her know he was ok. Turns that when he called, the wife of the dead pilot was at the house to see if the caller's wife had heard anything. The new widow asked the caller's wife to ask about her husband too. When the caller said, "I can't tell you" you can imagine what the reaction was....

JoeBob: WTH?
A shame for sure.
I wonder if the "terrorists" have anything to do with this amazing (tragic!) coincidence?

The Blue Angel pilot did not eject, it appears so he could ensure his aircraft did not hit an apartment building.
