Non-magnum?... That narrows things down a bit.
In no particular order...
.223 rem.: cheap and easy to shoot
22-250 rem: I like exploding p-dogs
.44 special (we're not limited to rifle cartridges only?) not much recoil, and it makes big holes
25-06 rem: great deer hunting round.
.280 Imp.: I don't own one, but me father's keeps up with my 7mm mag with 10 gr less powder.
