Bob Weggel in Plover, Wi. here. A friend brought over a nice early 1899 SRC in 32-40. Someone made a very bad makeshift staple to hold the saddle ring. The guy brought me what looks like a Winchester staple which has a stop ring on each leg of the staple to keep it from being inserted too far into the frame. As I remember, the Savage staple was just a plain staple without the ridge or stop and one leg of the staple was a bit longer as it encompassed the step down in the frame. Can anyone tell me which staple is correct??

Thanks.

yes, one leg is longer than the other. I can't say if the originals had the shoulder on not. The SRC I have has the shoulders, but I don't think the staple is original.

Yes, stepped. Both legs have a shoulder.

There were repro's made by a company in Canada but have been sold out for several years.

Bob, where have you been hiding?

Thanks guys for the info on the SRC staple. Well Rick, I have been busy as usual but have a new avenue of collecting. The 99's got too heavy for this old frame to lug around and I have a new interest in older Walther PPK's. However, I am not a traitor to Savage 99's. Bob
