Hello,

Can someone please tell me what a Remington 40X .22lr is worth? Generally speaking, I don't know much about this model rifle. I looked over the particular rifle in person, but I don't know much about its history or condition other than what was obvious.

I believe this rifle is the lighter-barreled version. It's still a target-style barrel, but I think they were also made with a heavier barrel.

The metal is in very good condition. I would say the metal on this old rifle would rate at least 90%. The stock is in good shape, but it wears an old recoil pad, which I am almost certain is not original to the stock.

What would such a rifle be worth in a fair, private-party transaction?

If it is the single shot model my guess is somewhere around the $1000 range depending on sights and stock. I was able to sell the factory stock and Redfield Olympic sights from mine for $250, which made it reasonable.
there were very few repeating models made, I have only seen one, and the price on them is what ever the market will bare.

Thank you. It is a single-shot rifle. I think the current owner removed the original sights and intends to keep them and sell the rifle without sights, but I am not sure about this.

What does he think it is worth ? Without the sights I think I would at least deduct what they are bringing on Ebay- which is around $200-$250 and go from there.

They are great shooting rifles, whether left as it or modified to suit your tastes.

For $800 without sights I'd let him keep it. As posted above, you will have to spend an additional $250 for sights. I've seen them at gun shows for $800 with sights.

I bought one with a shilen trigger and the original, no sights for $800 last year. I was happy to pay that.

I sold one last year in super nice condition, but no sights for $700. It was the heavier barrel version with the 700 style action. The lighter barrel gun has a 722 style action and normally won't sell as high. $800 is too high for that rifle in my opinion.

Go to rimfire central they'll know what it is worth

A production model will bring more than a CMP gun. even in a single shot. a clip feed will be big $$$$$$$$$$$$

Pricing on 40X's, like most guns will depend much on what part of the country you live in. In this area $800 would be a great deal on that rifle.

I'll tell you one thing. I have Win 52's of several different flavors, and other .22's and the 40X is my favorite to shoot and by far the most accurate. You won't be disappointed even if you spend $100 more than you think it is worth. Unless you are looking at it as an investment, I would buy it and enjoy every minute of shooting it. They definitely aren't going to go down in price.
