Struck by a philosophical streak, I was contemplating things that, like myself, used to be quite useful but have now become more or less completely useless. The first thing that I came up with was phone books. Other suggestions?

Those can may not ruin a good craft brew, but the aesthetics and philosophy of that is wrong!
Pocket knives and bic lighters can be used to open beer bottles, but then they are doubling as bottle openers.

My local ISP is the phone company and they will not install internet unless you have a land line. They also have a monopoly on internet service unless we use satellite internet.

There is a technical advantage to cans: they are full protection against UV and light struck beer.
