What's the difference between a Winchester 140 and 1400? I recently shot a friends 140 and fell in love with it. I have never had a shotgun fit me so well and never broke clays so consistently. Gunbroker has more 1400's listed than 140's. Any help would be appreciated.

The 140 was only made a short time - while the 1400 had a long run of about 17 years... I think one of the actual differences was in the action release and the addition of choke tubes.. I think..

Not an expert but as I remember it, the early model semi-auto (introduced around 1964) was the M1400. Later it was updated with some visual and mechanical changes and became the M1400 Mark II (not sure what the changes were). Later still it evolved into the M1500XTR for the higher grade and the M140 for the cheaper grade.

Winchester has the "affordable" guns with only 3 numerals; 120 or 1200, 140 or 1400 etc. Usually called Ranger. Cheaper wood. Have a 120 and love it.

I had a 1400 for a number of years. Shot great just had to listen to the experts tell me that they weren't a great shotgun. I finally got the bug and traded it off. I expect it's still plugging away for someone. . I was surprised to find that remington had a gas shotgun between patterned like the 11-48 no not the 58 that used a gas piston inside the magazine tube. I never had seen one until about a month ago.the gas system looked a lot like the 1400.
