I think the 358win would make a nice little blackie/moose gun under the appropriate distance. I've thought about myself but havent come across a decent short action to build on, now that ruger is supposed to be releasing a nice little 358, its a very possible option.

The airlines lost all my cousins luggage, only his rifle arrived.
A box of 30-06 in Naknek was 48.00. He was happy to find a box.
If he would have had an unusual caliber, he might have been up a crick.

A 30 06 or 300 WM or 300 WSM makes a great gun for hunting in Alaska untill.............you need something a whole lot bigger. In hunting up here for over 30 years I have never been charged by a bear but the last time son and I went to Kodiak on a deer hunt we were followed on two different occassions by a bear estimated to square out at 10 foot plus. My 300 WM felt really small. Any of the 300's or 06 make a great choice for caribou and with the right bullet moose. But I am telling ya I sure felt undergunned carrying that 300 WM with a pack load of deer meat 2 miles back to camp in the dark. Sold the 300 and now I use a 338 on Kodiak or when the potential is there to run into a bear problem.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I used the 300 win mag both times I went to Kodiak ran into bears within 20 yards in the alders both times.

That is why I use 200 grain bullets for deer.

Gotta remember a lot of people (including myself) pick calibers more because they just like them rather than need. I would have to say that the most popular calibers up here are 30-06, 300 WM, 338 WM and 375 H&H. Beyond that you can find all kinds of things. I guess comfort level also becomes an issue. Most that have been up here a few years worry less about bears than newbies .

I will be sure and point that out to him. I would imagine when the bushes start to shake a few yards from you and you don't have the foggiest idea what it is doing the shaking, things could get a little tense - - even for an old timer, let alone a newbie.

Just make sure he knows to identify what's in the bushes before shooting. Wouldn't want him to bag a granola muncher by accident.

My point is that once someone has been up here for a while and figured out there's not a bear behind every bush they don't necessarily pick the rifle they want to carry because of it. They pick it because it's a caliber they like. At least from what I have seen.

Uncle Sam also sent me in 84 - to Fairbanks, My choice was a 7 mag. When I got there a guy had the same rifle in a 375 H&H, which I bought. Both have served me very well.

I don't know if it's still the same, but when I was there, alot of military guys bought 300 mags, then sold them a year later when the found they couldn't afford the flights and equipment, and the committment required to hunt. Used to be you could buy a 300 for a couple hundred bucks, ready to hunt.
Good luck to him and you, it's a beautiful state and the only reason I'm not a resident is my better half would be in Florida and I'd be in Alaska!!
