Five people including the priest, two nuns and two parishioners were held by assailants who raided the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray near Rouen in Normandy at 9am.
The clergyman, named as Jacques Hamel, is believed to have been beheaded during the attack while another hostage is 'hovering between life and death' in hospital.
The two attackers have been 'neutralised' by elite marksmen in a dramatic police operation while the building is being searched for possible explosives. French president Francois Hollande said the men 'claimed to be from' ISIS.
There were reports the attackers shouted 'Daesh' – an alternative name for ISIS often used by the French government – as they ran into the church. At least one of the men was dressed in Islamic clothing, according to French media reports, and an anti-terrorist unit has already taken up the investigation.
It comes as it emerged that the place of worship was one of a number of Catholic churches on a terrorist 'hit list' found on a suspected ISIS extremist last April.

I just left Normandy on Sunday after riding around it for six days on a bicycle. It's a green and pleasant place, a quiet rural district.

France has a crisis it is not sure how to handle. Up to 18% of the country is Muslim. It is a product of nearly 60 years of immigration from northern Africa after the Algerian Civil War. Paris and Leon especially have huge muslim populations.
The French would like to expell them all, but the numbers make it impossible.
If the muzzis keep this sort of thing up, the French may remind them who it was taht perfected that beheading thing during the French Revolution with the guillotine.

I was in Brittany and Normandy, rural areas, almost no immigrants. Quiet and safe.
I got the impression that tourism is down.
This latest atrocity weren't entirely random, turns out one of the perps lived with his parents near that church and was under a sort of house arrest after having been caught traveling to Syria to join ISIS.
I received no warnings of any sort but didn't ask either. Armed Cops were present at Mont St Michel and Omaha Beach because the country is on alert. Still this had no effect on me personally arriving (by ferry from Ireland), in country, or leaving.
There was a news story about Chunnel lines from England to France being 3 hours long on account of security checks.
