Buy one with a Kawasaki engine. The Kawasaki motors have a real problem with valve guides and valve seats.

Bad boy at the time and lots of hours of research was best combo of value for the dollar while not going commercial... we only mow maybe 3 acres here, but its done as quickly to mow the 3 yards as it used to take to mow 1...
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

I have a Bobcat brand 48", much faster than a standard riding lawn mower. Been there done that sold the rider. Mine has a 6 year/600 hour warranty http://www.bobcatturf.com/products/xrz/

I sell John Deere equipment for a living I feel we make an outstanding mower, but there are a lot of good mowers out there. My suggestion is to make sure you buy from a local dealer.Unlike a car there is no way i would drive 2-3 hours away to save a little bit of money.Service down the road would be my first thought before price.Exmark, scag, hustler and of course Deere make good mowers.I have never been one just because i sell Green do i think that is the only one to buy.Good luck on your decision. There are brands that i see with a lot of problems but i am not gonna start an internet fight:)

Lot of good information from first hand experience in this thread. My .02 is purchase from the best local dealer, do not spend less than $5k, do not purchase from chain/box store they have no repair support and seldom carry the belts blades, and filters, purchase in late winter, early spring when last years models and new models are on sale. I went with Gravley because of past exprience and dealer support in my area.

There are several good zero mowers on the market. The main thing to consider is size of the lawn, shape of lawn and flat or hilly. The commercial mowers are costly but worth the money in the long run. It's the old "you get what you pay for".

I've kept mental note on what friends, family and neighbors run and have decided to go with a Scag for my next ZT. That's as soon as my '91 Grasshopper front deck wears out.

When I started mowing on my off days from the fire dept. I bought a nearly new Cub Cadet tractor style and used it for the first 4 or 5 years. I then bought a brand new Toro Z Master with a 62 inch deck and a liquid cooled 21 horse Kawasaki. That was in 1999 I believe and I'm still using that same Toro with ALL the original parts other then belts. Its been a dandy.
