You'd have gotten better answers if you'd have asked:
Which is best...blondes, brunettes, or redheads??

Every time I see a 308, I throw up a little in my mouth, but it IS a very sensible, logical caliber. I'd pick a Model 70 FWT 3006 w a Leopold 2.5X8X36. My sentiments exactly.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I'd chime for the .260/6.5x55, but it won't scratch your recoil fetish... Jeff, I was about ready to chime in on the 260. Got a Stainless Ruger, in 260 with a Zytel Stock, with a 1.5 x 6 powered scope on top... its a pretty handy set up.... While Jorge and BSA might like a feather weight in 06, I've got one in 7 x 57 with a 3 x 9 Leupold with German Number 1 Heavy Duplex cross hairs I tend to reach for a lot during hunting season when the weather is sunny.... The Ruger in 260, or an ADL in 243 with a 4 power Weaver on top, gets grabbed when the weather is crappy outside in fall deer season. Hunting at 30/30 ranges, its almost like the 308 is " too much" gun.... like Jeff O. expounds on, they "overpenetrate" actually the lighter calibers will do the same job, with a lot less recoil, at least with my handloads vs 308 factory stuff. Seafire, a fwt in 7x57 would be bad azzed too. Or even one in 270 win like donsm70 suggested would be top pick too.. I've got 3 Featherweights.... a 223, the 7 x 57, and one in a 6.5 x 55... LOVE every one of them.....

Just like some people have no use for a .270, I feel the same way about the .308. The fact that it is imminently practical has nothing to do with it for me. I only own one bolt action rifle with iron sights so I guess that would be it for me. 700 ADL .270 with a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x40.
Don't roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

My Lipseys Limited Run Ruger Hawkeye RSI 30-06 with open sights and a Leupold FX-II 3x20 scope with Heavy Duplex. Cerakoted and Micro- Slicked by Hired Gun on here. IF needed I have a Trijicon 3-9x40 Accupoint Green Dot that could replace the Leupie AMRA

The AR10 is a good 308 platform but heavy and you can have one also!

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Right now I own an older Mo.7 SS 308 in a Brown Pounder. With a Zeiss 2 1/2 -8 and mount, sling and fully loaded it is just a hair over 7 Lbs.It is a great big timber rifle for Elk and Deer and I have plopped some speed goats at close to 400 yards with it.If I could only have one rifle that would be it.I have had several 308`s over the years my favorite was a Winchester push feed Feather weight with a 2-7 Leupold on it.It was my go to Out West rifle for years before I discovered I needed a magnum to do the same thing this one did.

Your propsal sounds great.
I used a Savage 99E chambered for .308 Win in that role for ten years or so. You could do worse. I took coyotes, grouse, porcupines, deer and elk with it. The local gun stor has two of them for $299 apiece. A Savage 99 in .308 would fill that role well indeed. Wow, $299. I never see deals like that. I guess a guy has to live up north to find them. I do have a Savage 99C .308, but I've yet to hunt with it.

You think the 308 is a hard kicker? I personally feel it is moderate in recoil. The 200 grain Partition load I used for timber elk in Washington state was not what I would call benchrest friendly but it was a fine timber elk load!

How many of us pick the rifle we hunt with because we want to test a particular bullet or load? Or a rifle we deem to be perfect for a particular situation? I own several "sensible" rifles in 308, 30-06, 280AI, 7x57 and 7MM Remington Magnum along with several special purpose guns put together for long range or very short range shooting but the rifle I generally hunt with is a 7x57 topped with a 3x9 Bushnel Elite that is short and somewhat heavy, a true tackdriver built specifically to be handy in tight box stands. It also rides just right in the cab of a truck, not light and bouncy but not too heavy to be quickly handled. My actual sensible 7x57 hardly ever gets taken hunting other than for backup purposes. My two "sensible" 308 rifles however get called up for any mountain hunting or timber hunting where being light makes a lot of difference and when a 180-200 grain Partition seems to be the right bullet.

Although I would also include an early 700 BDL as an option. I've hunted with a 308, but not in the last 40 years or so. I've grown fond of long actions as short actions limit bullet seating for one thing. I have 308's but I imagine my kids will have to pick over them or sell them at my estate auction. I may take my AR 308 for PD's though. (Along with others) But then people like: F250's, Ram, and Silverado's. I'm glad there's so many choices.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Well no doubt short actions limit bullet seating depth but reality notes this usually cause little angst. What's not to like about a rifle that can toss 150's near 2900 fps or 200 grain bullets at 2500 fps and weighs less than 7.5 pounds? This is about sensible not personal likes, My favorite bore diameter is .224 but it won't cover as many bases as .284 or .308.

Those that dislike the .308 usually have little to no experience with it and are generally typical males that equate cartridge size to killing ability.

.30/06 and 180 gr Nosler Partition. All this proves is good shot placement and bullet performance. Had nothing to do with some letters and numbers on the head stamp.
