Found one that hand been built up into a .257 Roberts. Judging by fired cases a non-Ackley .257. Extremely light weight, maybe a #1 contour barrel, and a very slim light stock. Workmanship pretty good. Old repair to the pistol grip cap. Chambering neatly engraved on the barrel. Reminds you a lot of a Kimber M84 classic in dimensions and feel.
Should I get excited about $800 for it?

Maybe, depends on who built it. It would cost you more than that to build one like it, but you most likely would never make much on it if you tried to sell it. The G33/40(BRNO small ring 98 produced under German occupation) is one of the slickest and lightest 98 actions for a sporter. If it trips your trigger, snag it up.(I believe standard 98 parts will interchange, except for the small ring barrel of course).

The action alone is worth over $500. Pic's would be cool.
Sounds like a very good deal if it isn't bubbad

Are you sure it's not a Spanish or Mexican Mauser. Measure the action bolt hole centers, that will tell you if it's g33/40! $800 is a lot in my area, more like a $400 to $500 rifle if it's a g33/40!!

How does the Kar 98 compare to the G33/40? I have a lightweight Kar 98 in 257 Roberts I've considered selling.

A Kar.98 is a small ring receiver with a large ring barrel shank, a G33/40 is a true small ring 98. The Kar also has a slightly differently shaped trigger and guard, while the G33/40(I believe) uses the "standard" 98 pattern.

Are you buying a 257, the action or both?
That would be a lot for the action...unless the action has a 3-way safety, new bolt handle welded on, surface ground to remove charging flange and been D&T straightly and correctly for mauser SR bases.
Aftermarket bottom metal wouldn't hurt my feelers either...:)

If the stock had some real appeal to me and I desired it as, then yeah, then I'd pay up money for the rifle over a large ring and take a chance on da barrel. But going the 800 would depend on the stock (for me) for an unmodified SR 98.
But if it had the action mods mentioned, sans new bottom metal, and planned to use as is due to its visual appeal, then would be excited about the $800.

If you've been looking for a Mauser in 257 Roberts or can convince yourself that you need one, then yeah, go for it. If not, then factor in all of the work you'll have to do or pay for and go from there. Okie John
If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

Should I get excited about $800 for it? If properly drilled and tapped (or not D&T) and not poorly polished it sounds like a decent deal.
