I have spent a lot of time with hammer guns. Not much with 1911's and never owned a decocker gun. I can drop a hammer. But the question was theoretical, can not imagine why one would want to carry that way.

IIRC my Mark IV has a floating firing pin, therefor it could be carried safely with the hammer down, but as noted, not a good idea.

There is a half-cock notch. By design the hammer can only fall to half-cock if your finger is off the trigger. Hold the hammer, pull the trigger to release the hammer, lift your finger off the trigger, lower the hammer. If the hammer slips, Colt says the pistol won't fire. Definitely not a test I want to take while pointing the pistol at my foot, but that's how it's supposed to work.
