According to news reports, the refinery in Alabama has been down for a week now, but no one has acted a fool until the media unleashed it's all out assault on insanity yesterday. Today, you're taking your life in your own hands attempting to buy gas in the south today.

Had not heard anything about this... is this it? https://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/east-coast-could-face-gas-shortage-rising-prices-091616.htmlWeek-long shutdown
A week ago the Colonial Pipe, which is the main transporter of gasoline and diesel fuel from Houston to the East Coast, suffered a leak in rural Alabama and had to be shut down.
Now, engineers say it may be another week before the leak is repaired and the fuel can start flowing again. That could result in a significant draw-down in supplies in areas served by the pipeline, resulting in price hikes and possible shortages.
At the same time, Reuters reports BP will conduct major maintenance this weekend at its Whiting, Indiana refinery, reducing its output by as much as half. So, as oil prices have been fairly soft this week, the outlook is for gasoline prices to move in the other direction, at precisely the time they normally start to fall. Low-priced states hit first
For consumers in the most-affected states, the saving grace is the fact they are starting out with some of the lowest gasoline prices in the country. South Carolina, expected to be the hardest-hit state, currently has the lowest prices in the nation, with a statewide average of $1.94 a gallon. The price is $2.02 in North Carolina and $1.98 in Virginia.
Meanwhile, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has declared a state of emergency, allowing the suspension of federal rules and regulations that limit the hours of operation that commercial vehicles may be in use.

Filled the Honda and the F150 tonite for 2.05 per gal . Good thing the truck has a 36 gal gas tank and also gets 20+ MPG on the highway.

Around here, it raises $0.25+ in a day on a regular basis. It's how they play the consumer. Pity the fool that needs gas on the day of the increase, they pay the most.

"Supply problems" are part of the game. A small problem in a region jacks prices up everywhere. How many times since the late 70's, have you seen someone trying to get gas, unsuccessfully. During all these shortages we have not turned on the news and seen cars out of gas.

One leak from a refinery shouldn't cause a spike and a panic. I am sure the Obama EPA has stifled any new refineries being built in that region. I am also surprised they are using a pipeline for refined gasoline? Go Trump.

I don't think there has been a refinery built in 35 years. The old plants are grandfathered on some of the more onerous regulations, and the technology doesn't exist to meet regulations for a new plant. I heard that about 7 - 8 years ago, but I bet it is still true.

A quick check shows there are 141 operational refineries today. Two had major upgrades in 2014. But the last refinery built from scratch was in 1977 in LA..

Dang it!
Prices in this part of Idaho and Eastern Oregon are holding within that $2.35 -$2.50 bracket.

$1.77 here but, unfortunately, only one of our four vehicles accept regular gas.

When you can't get something from the cheapest source (pipeline from the Gulf Coast), you have to pay more to get it from alternative sources (expensive US flag vessels from Gulf Coast which take longer, etc). Plain and simple economics guys, no conspiracy or any other bs...

I'm looking at around $1.79 per gallon in SC this morning. That's what it's been the last couple of fill ups so doesn't seem to be affecting us much...yet.
When a column of troops under Lt. Col. Francis Smith moved into the countryside to collect arms and munitions gathered by the patriot militia, hostilities erupted at Lexington and Concord on Apr. 19, 1775.

Dave Yep. Like you find on the left coast, and Colorado. How many Southern states do you see legalizing Pot, raising the minimum wage to $15/hr, voting for a democrat for president and having large unionized businesses? Yep, Dixie is full of stupid. And thank God for it.

The pipeline break was about 30 miles from my home; dumped 360,000 gallons into a Wildlife Management Area. They claim it is "contained". The Guv proclaimed a state of emergency which makes price gouging illegal.
