The worst for me was a Marlin CB 45-70. I put a better recoil pad on it, that helped some.
I shot a Sako that had a octagon 26? Inch barrel in 375 HH, that was relatively pleasant.

this is my limit. .375 RUM shooting 235 gr TSXs @ 3150. any more and I could not physically keep the scope away from my noggin, even though the 2.5x UL has ~5" of eye relief.

viking - had my M1895 factory modified to straight grip config. Much the same as the CB. Changed from factory recoil pad to Packmyer as well...it still got your attention quick at 7#. But worst recoil was a friends .45/70 NEF "Handi-rifle". That was like touching off a 10ga hi-brass magnum...ouch. Did that just ONCE! Heavy slugs, light rifles, stock design all contribute to just how recoil feels. Homesteader

I have thought that for years every time I see a pic of your 7lb 375 RUM, if you bumped 300 gr Partitions to 2900+ that bastid would be pure buck wild to hang on too.

I had H&R Handi Rifles in .45-70 and .450 Marlin and I never minded shooting them. Also had a couple H&R single shot 10 gauge magnums and I liked shooting them too.

I have another .375 RUM that weighs ~8# and I feed it 260 gr. Noslers @ 3000. it doesn't seem as abusive to me. rifle weight or recoil impulse? don't know.

The recoil velocity numbers of that 7lber would eye opening, or could be eye closing if you lost your grip.

Worst "rifle" I've ever shot was an H&R Ultra Light 12ga. when I worked for H&R. I shot multiple groups at 100 yards on the indoor range that consisted of 5 shots into one ragged hole using Remington Buckhammers. It took every ounce of concentration to take what was coming and not flinch. Only thing worse was the 3.5 inch 12ga. turkey gun with 2 oz. turkey loads.
My Abolt .338 Win. is a pet compared to those. 12 ga 3" slugs will out kick most rifles.

I had a wood stock Winchester model 70 in a .270 that felt like Mike Tyson had punched me in the jaw and arm every time I pulled the trigger. That SOB left and was replaced with a Sako in 300 WM which was nothing compared to the .270.

The relationship between felt recoil and stock fit is the whole basket of berries. If it fits properly even the big bores are fun. If not....well just how masochistic are you?

Yes, believe it or not Coach, I had a little 45 cal Seneca or Cherokee T/C muzzle loader that would belt me right under the right cheekbone with every shot, after five or six shots I had a damn headache. That was a 45 cal round ball or light weight T/C maxi-ball with only 90 gr of black powder. lol

I know of a .303 British that fits me awful well....just sayin!!

My Blaser R8 .300 Weatherby is very user friendly from a recoil perspective and it is getting full .300 Weatherby ballistics. It should kick more than it does.
NULAs for me are the most unpleasantly recoiling rifles I have fired in a given chambering.

I do not like Kimber Montana's chambered for WSM cartridges. I don't care for most McMillans in anything 300 mag and up except an Echols Legend, which tames the beasts. Generally anything with a Monte Carlo comb sucks unless it is properly designed and the cartridge does not recoil too badly. Weatherby stocks REALLY suck.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

my two savage 99s in 308 kick worse than my ruger 77 and browning xbolt 3006.
My Savage 99C .308 grabbed my attention the first time I shot it too although that was with 180 grain bullets. I haven't shot it with anything lighter yet.

Would've been interesting if posters had clarified whether they're talking off the bench or field positions...
As far as the OP's point, my Ruger Alaskan, which I dropped in a boat paddle with a Lombsaver, definitely fits his description. Even shooting Superformance loads (and that 20" barrel) it is far milder muzzle blast and recoil-wise than I would've ever imagined. In fact, I probably never would've tried it if my buddy hadn't bought one first. Even with that notoriously thin comb, I still don't get slapped in the face at all. (I'm shooting open sighted).
Disclaimer: I rarely shoot off the bench anymore. Most are not conducive to a pain free experience where recoil is concerned.

I always heard the 71 kicked hard, but such was not the case with that rifle...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA
