Well, heck, up in the rimfire forum folks ain't getting too excited about this so maybe it'll get more chatter here. I'm liking what Ruger has done with the latest iteration of their bread and butter .22 pistol.

Easy one push button take down, no more loaded chamber indicator, a redesigned bolt stop and safety and the safety is ambidextrous - but they include a gizmo with the pistol to make it a right handed safety only.

My biggest complaint with the MK series is that the serial number is on the upper receiver instead of the frame...it would have been nice to be able to switch uppers without having to register each upper as a "firearm"...

Very nice. I like my Mk III so much that I sold my Woodsman.

I am a MK II fan myself. I have owned the same MKII for over a quarter century with heavy, heavy use and only minor parts replacement. The new one looks good, but it is hard to abandon an old friend.

Looks great. Can't say that I would replace one of my older versions, but I might add to them!

Glad to see that it uses the same mags. The positive mag ejection is nice too.

The one thing I've always hated about Ruger's 22 auto, was breaking it down for cleaning.

Might have to pick up another now that they have made this improvement.

Yep. I avoid breaking down my Mark II for cleaning until it gets so dirty it starts to malfunction. That's a lot of rounds though.

Smart changes, I like it. Takedown has always been a weak point with the design. It's really no problem once you get used to it, but it's always a bit of a challenge to teach someone how to do it properly, especially the part about the hammer strut.

Had no problems with Mk 1 and Mk II.
Pretty simple and fast once you get the knack.
Guess a lot of folks don't.

MK II 6 7/8" target my fave (taper, not Gov).

IMHO the new MK IV would look better if the pivot pin was large slotted screw like the old Colt AR15.

Not sure how my pac lite barrels are going to fit on it

But the ambidextrous safety is a biggie for me.

If you do it a few times, it's really no problem. When I worked at a gun shop, it was guaranteed every one you sold, at some point the owner will be back for you to show him how to do it again...or again...or again.

Is it me or does the frame no longer look to be stamped steel? Polymer? Cast aluminum?


ETA - It says one piece CNC machined grip frame. Wonder if it's aluminum or steel?

Silver is stainless steel, blued is aluminum, steel upper in both cases. I think that's on the Gunblast website review.

The entire upper comes right off, btw. It just unhooks from the pivot pin, the video in Jeff Quinn's site shows that. Although since it is the serial numbered part it's not like an AR where a fellow could get one lower and several uppers - that would be pretty neat if you could.

I won't be getting rid of my threaded Mk III 22/45, but I wouldn't mind adding to my Ruger .22 collection. This looks like the best Ruger .22 auto yet.

Interesting that they didn't cast the frame. They have one of the best casting facilities in the world, and they went CNC???

I wonder if there was something about the frame that wouldn't lend itself well to casting?
