The Russians learned hard lessons in WWII and although their gov may treat their citizens like crap they understand the need to protect the workers and their families in order to keep the machine producing. Our guv on the other hand sings koom bye yaa and expects the MAD theory to rule the day and that's all the protection we need. Until we develop a real world, fully tested and operable missile defense system it will be this way for a long time.
Do a quick study on how the Russians civil defense planning compares to ours and you get a better idea of the out come in a full blown shooting match ie. nukes. Basically, we're F'ed if we trade atoms.

in this era, russian is no longer the enemy. our enemy is the arabs and has been for a long time and we have been kissing their ass because of their oil. russia and the US have a lot of common enemies. not a hug and kiss friend, but a case of the enemy of your enemy is your friend thing. Such foolish talk falls into the game plan of the Russians. Putin is "old school" and will continue to solidify his base of power in his region. A second warm water naval port in Syria is on the drawing board. The US has been greatly diminished as a "player" on the world stage. Eight years of HRC will give us the influence of a Country lost in its own muck and mire. fighting with russia will help our true enemy. last i checked russia never attacked the US and russia isn't sending terrorists into our communities in waves. we can't fight everybody and win. good way to get your ass kicked. pick your battles. A continuation of the foolish talk. I didn't mention FIGHT you did. There are other ways to defeat your enemy. But you have zeroed in on actual battle lines.

Any Military guys care to give their opinion ? Would we have an exit plan? Not that it would matter, because Putin would start launching nukes long before anybody could even think of declaring victory. It is possible that we could get in a limited shooting war in Syria, but it wouldn't last long...either we'd both realize we were about to end the world and quit acting stupid or we'd continue and prove beyond a doubt we are....either way, it wouldn't last long.

A full blown war with Nato? Anybody up for 300,000 dead to crush them?
Anybody up for living out their life in underground bunkers to escape radiation? There won't be watching the war on Fox then loading up the family and heading to the Promanade shops if we go to war with them.

I agree with Pete.
Could America win a war against Russia?
A nuclear war? Probably not. But neither would they.
A large scale conventional war? Depending what you mean by 'win'.Most likely. But at the cost of Central and Eastern Europe being in ruins for a generation. Would our goal be to destroy Russia? - See "Nuclear War" above.
A small scale war against a NATO ally? Depends what you mean by 'win'. Our goal would probably be to push them out of the country at the lowest cost possible. It is unlikely our goal would be to destroy Russia. (See "Nuclear War", above.) And whatever happens, the invaded ally would have been trashed for quite a while.
A small scale war against a non-Nato Former Soviet Union state like Ukraine, Moldovia or Georgia. Probably not in our cold National interest to expend a lot of blood and treasure on that. Further, there is an element of Civil War in these conflicts. For example, Ukraine has been divided on whether to associate with Russia or Germany since before World War 1.
An economic war? We are currently kicking their butts. Russia is basically a supplier of raw minerals with a large military-industrial sector. There is an effort to rebuild their military, but it is uneven and the military is inexperienced at projecting power much beyond their borders.
The pr war? I think we are winning it. A lot more Russians have moved here permanently than Americans who have moved there. Wiki estimates about 900,000 native Russian speakers currently living in the US.
A Cyber War? Now that would be (or perhaps, is) interesting. Mostly from lack of targets on their side.

Since the professional politicians began managing wars in 1950, has the USA won one?
Imagine your grave on a windy winter night. You've been dead for 70 years. It's been 50 since a visitor last paused at your tombstone..... Now explain why you're in a pissy mood today.
