I like to consider myself a BBQ guru, and go on the hunt for it whenever I travel to other places. Some of the best stuff closest to me is in the Kansas City Metro area. Here is the list of "can't miss"

1. SLAPS BBQ, KCK. The Holy Grail in my opinion!

2. Butchers BBQ, Wellston OK. Probably the #2 spot!

3. Jack Stack, KC Metro area

4. Roy's BBQ, Hutchinson Ks. IMO the best BBQ closest to me.

5. When Pigs Fly, Wichita KS. Local joint that serves really good BBQ!

I am almost (OK I am) obsessed with Good BBQ. Check out some of these joints, I think you will be pleased. There are many others I have ate at that are very good, but these are a few of my favorites. I was in Memphis over the summer and wasn't overly impressed. I asked a local where to go and he said Memphis BBQ was hype. Told me if you wanted good BBQ in Memphis you had to make it yourself. Very disappointed.

What are your favorite joints?

GO!

The closest BBQ place I like is in El Paso and it's Famous Dave's.

You received good advice in Memphis. I'll put together a local list for the greater OKC area if you ever come to God's country.

Not any place around here that excites me. Couple of places in Memphis that are good if you like dry rub.
The one place I won't miss if I'm within a 100 miles is Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa AL. Only choices on the menu was half rack of ribs or full rack. Always got the full rack and one to go.

Fresh Air BBQ in Jackson, Ga. somewhat close to Lake Jackson.

we had a Famous Dave's near Stone Mtn, but i don't beleive they're there now.

good bbq is an art form. the good news is that just about anybody can slow smoke meat. getting it to the top of the list requires a bit more effort.

We dont have one.

There was a place in Great Falls that my wife liked. Tony Roma's. Its gone now.

I am bound and determined to make good barbecue myself, the way I like it. Which is apparently how no one else likes it!

On a raod trip to Florida many years back I developed a fondness for small town bbq joints. They are mostly similar but two that stood out were the Whole Hog in Little Rock, AR,., and a little joint in Moultrie, GA. called The BBQ Pit. Good food and friendly folks.
There are NO bbq places like what you find down south, here near me. BBQ just means that you cooked it on a grill to most people here.

There's an annual 'rib fest' here. It's convinced me to stay home and make my own. No point in paying for something I can do better at home. Still need to tweak my sauce some. There used to be a rib truck nearby that had the best sauce I've ever tasted, but they've moved on. I wish I could duplicate it.

I sure dont mind low and slow, but I get kind of tired of all these "smoke rings", "barks and crusts".

I have heard that Franklin BBQ in Austin TX is legendary if you don't mind the 4 hour wait in line to get it. Also heard Salt Lick BBQ in Texas is worth a road trip as well. I can already see my wife's eyes rolling in the back of her head.

Yeah. And I know( knew) em all! Best was Crosstown. But they shut down years ago! Can't make myself eat at Southside. If I had to force myself, I'd go to Meyers. wink
