WCB's thread got me to thinking.
Singers and song-writers.....and all.
Who are you favs? Song-writers that have done their OWN singing and dance? Who do you appreciate......and only those who have done their own music....their own way????

Too many to name but Guy Clark, Steve Earle, John Prine, the late Steve Goodman and (the also late) Hoyt Axton would top my list...
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

Singing and Song writing is a full enough bill....who danced too?
I'm just impressed these days if the "stars" are singing a song that they actually wrote, or had a hand in writing. Now of course there are "Kitchen Passes" allowed and my first pass goes to George Strait. He has always been able to listen to a song and know whether or not he's going to be able to "pull it off" or not. He's talented in many ways. And he has the hits to prove it.
One of my favorite song writers is Dave Mathews. He has talent in writing songs. His ability to hear other peoples music and put it into his ideas and....well the band he has put together is truly amazing. I know his style of music is not for everyone but he is one of my fav's.
Sting has always written very intelligent music. Just follow along with the Syncronicity album and have your literature lesson too boot.
John Mayer is one of the best "new kids on the block." His talent knows no end.
OK. I'm done. 4 now. And please remember the rules about music....
Good night,
Mark

Singer/songwriters-Lennon and McCartney,Warren Haynes,Gregg Allman,Willie Nelson.The Stones wrote a lot of stuff I liked,espically during the Mick Taylor period.
As for songwriters who do insturmental work-John McLaughlin,Al DiMeola,Chic Corea,John Coltrane,Eric Johnson.Throw Dickey Betts in there for good measure.

I remember an interview with Gordon Lightfoot when the interviewer asked him where he foung the ambition and guiding force to right the "Xyz" album and he said...."Well I was getting kind of hungry and needed some money." (Or something very close.) None the less, Gordon wrote some cool tunes.

I'd have to go back a few years and say Hank Williams SR, Waylon Jennings, and Tom T. Hall.

+1 on Gordon Lightfoot. Amazing. Van Morrison is another. I grew up with MTV, but outgrew it in a hurry.
Now with even more aplomb

Bristoe, most of the time I think youre a crackpot, I prefer to think of myself as pleasantly eccentric and moderately grumpy. To the untrained eye, such characteristics are frequently interpreted as "crackpotism".
