We have two excellent offers on airfare to Africa for the second week of March (spring break) - one to Dar es Salaam and one to Windhoek.
I've read that Tanzania law requires a minimum 10 day hunt. Is this true? South Africa offers some shorter "first timer" hunts, is there such a possibility in Tanzania? Or an à la carte hunt, so to speak - say one or two animals over a 2 or 3 day period? Don't need anything fancy, an Impala or something like that would do.
As I said the flights are very good deals, only slightly more than going to Hawaii. Would be a shame to go there and not get at least a short taste of a hunt in. I can't go for an extended period of time (2 weeks total, maximum, with more likely 10 days).
What are my options? (other than going to RSA or not hunting)?
Thanks.

Book a hunt in Namibia if you are going to Windhoek.

In Tan you have to buy a 10 day license. You don't necessarily have to hunt all 10 days though. But...you will probably need a charter flight out of Dar, which is expensive. Come to think of it, every damn thing is expensive in Tanzania! Also, since it has been a few years, I don't remember what the Tanzania hunting season is.
Namibia is the perfect place for a first time African hunt! Reasonable prices, friendly people and a good infrastructure to make getting around easy.
Also, if you are bringing your own rifle, I would highly recommend the services of Steve Turner at Travel with Guns. Even if you are getting your tickets elsewhere, ask him and offer to pay for his advice. It will be worth it!

Namibia is a great place to hunt. You will have a great time. Don't forget the sunscreen.

Is the flight to Windhoek direct? And out of what city?

The Tanzania season used to start much later than March...June 1st or July 1st? Might have changes by now. I know an outfitter in the Selous in Tanzania whose hunt costs are reasonable, and include the charter flight out of Dar. PM me if interested.

Is the flight to Windhoek direct? And out of what city? Vancouver, BC, for CDN$1500 round trip all taxes and fees included. Same price to Dar es Salaam. That is US$1120 all inclusive. The flight is via Amsterdam with KLM.

We did the charter flight from Dar out to Western Tanzania. It think it was around $15,000 for the charter. Definitely a surprise expense. However, the trophy fees were quite reasonable.

It will cost you at least 3 times a much for a 1 week hunt(which requires buying a 10 day license) for plains game in Tz as it will in Namibia. Actually probably more than 3 times as much. And forget a hunt for less than a week in Tz because then the cost is beyond absurd. One week or less hunts out of Windhoek are easy and a real bargain for plains game packages.
