My son is finally old enough for a rifle and loves the savage 99. Was hoping to find a 30-30 to put under the tree for him. Let me know what you guys have.
Thanks
Brad

A quick look on Gunbroker.com showed two on the first page of 99 listings. I didn't look any further. One was opening at a penny, the other one was at $900.00.

30-30 in a EG is the holy grail for me. sucks i can't afford one! i have a EG 300savage after market wood with the metal around 98% i would sell for 650.00

Is a bolt action Savage 30-30 out of the question? I have seen two mint Savage 340 rifles in 30-30 for sale in the last month. Both were $300. And both also had a mount and scope.
These will be easier to find in the short term if you don't find what you are looking for. A nice 99 in 30-30 will probably cost a lot more. You can get the 99 later. One will show up, but not right away.
Getting a 99 in 30-30 will also mean that scoping options will prove to be more complicated unless already drilled and tapped.
Just a thought.

Just a thought. I saw your reply to this and thought "Oh no, Jeff's selling the 30-30!". Whew, glad you weren't!

I wouldn't rule out the 303 Savage, if he loves 99's he'll learn to appreciate Savage's proprietary cartridges.
303 and 30-30 are ballistic twins.

Why not a 300 Savage? Probably the most available/affordable 99 and a great cartridge to boot.

As much as I adore .30-30 and .303 Savages, I wouldn't rule out one in .300. You can load it down to .30-30 levels if that's what he/you likes, and have the capability of full house loads for the occasional mastadon, tiger, or somesuch should the need arise.

ditto what has been said about the .300 Savage. I'll add that it is not difficult to find ammo in LGSs, and plentiful off the internet http://ammoseek.com/ammo/300-savage?sort=price

Not sure if you would consider a 99F in .308 Win for him? I have a nice one I'd turn loose for a fair price. Made in 1957, so it's pre-60 with the safety/lever lock and nice checkering. If you reload, Hodgdon publishes reduced loads for H4895.

I had thought about a bolt action. I think he would be content using the single shot he's been using. He has a 303 hanging on his wall that was handed down to him, and that's what made him like them. I thought about a 308 last year, but he shot it down saying he liked the 30-30 round. He's a funny kid, says all he needs is a 30-30 and when he's bigger a 45-70.

Grammar is important. Capitol letters are the difference between "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" & "helping your uncle jack off a horse".
