Hey guys I tried getting some info on this in the lever action section but I figured I should try here as well. I might be picking up a model 94xtr in 7x30 waters. The rifle is checkered and has a 24" pipe on it. I am normally a Marlin guy when it comes to lever guns but seeing this Winchester in an odd ball caliber has kind of got me thinking I might need to own it.
Problem is I know nothing about the caliber. What is the good and bad with it?Suitable for whitetail? what about anything larger?
Thanks Guys

I would think bullet selection is you major limiting factor. Last time I had one, I only recall Federal making factory ammo for it, but it is available (130gr?). Handload wise, not too many flat point/round nose out there in 7mm. Mine were built on Contenders and I used 120 NBT, but the 139 SST was also pretty good too.

Thank you, I ended up passing up on the rifle even thought the price was right. After looking into it more, and from what you and others have said the bullet availability is just to limited for me.

I bought one when they first became available and shot only cast bullets in it. As I recall, it was reasonably accurate.
Never used it for hunting and quickly lost interest and sold it. In comparison with the .30-30, the slightly flatter trajectory was cancelled out by the use of a lighter bullet. No real advantage.

I have one of these rifles NIB. Bought it on a whim. Looked into the caliber and found out it is really popular round in the Contender. Great round with much better ballistics than the standard 30-30.
If I ever decide to hunt with it, I would have no problem hunting with 2 rounds. Heck my expensive Montana only holds 3 rounds and the type of hunting I would be doing with this rifle would usually be limiting me to 1, maybe 2 shots (timber and brush).
