I am not an expert on optics (or anything for that matter). Just another dumbass with an internet connection. FWIW... I am most impressed with these 8x25 EDs http://www.hawkeoptics.com/sapphire-8x25-black-binocular.htmlI own some leica 10x25s and have access to some swarovski 8x20s. I prefer my Yosemites to either. In general if I think I will need glass, I dont carry compacts. This last Colorado Elk 2nd Rifle I tried a pair of the Hawke 8x25s. These are far and away the best compacts I have used. Not merely adequate but actually good - FOV, brightness, resolution, image flatness. The other hunters in the group - most enthusiastically - agree.

I know its comparing dissimilar binos, but how do they compare to the yo's that you say you prefer over other compacts?
I carry a pretty small set of 8x28 (bushnell excursions) quite a bit. They are OK, and not much their size is better within a reasonable $$.
Smaller is always better for a daily carry glass... These hawkes might be their successor?
Quit giving in inch by inch then looking back to lament the mile behind ya and wonder how to preserve those few feet left in front of ya. They'll never stop until they're stopped. That's a fact.

I prefer the Hawkes to my Yosemites: Optically, I find the Hawkes superior in every aspect. Ergonomically, I prefer the single hinge of the Yosemites. But not enough to carry them over the Hawkes.

8x32's are as "compact" as I'll go. Mine weigh 17 oz's and are very useable in the field... Grady, how much do the Hawke 8x25's weigh? Thanks..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I don't see why no one makes a truly compact bino with a 5 or 6 power.
A 5x20 would still have a very useful 4mm exit pupil, which would get everything done except for first/last light. And it would be easier to handhold steadily.

I bought a pair of these and have been very pleased. http://swfa.com/Vortex-8x28-DiamondBack-Binocular-P89927.aspxIf they offered them in a 6X28 I'd buy another set in a minute.

I have a pair of 8x25 Minox compacts. They are really good for watching theatre and concert productions. Like others, if it is for hunting or observing wildlife, the lowest I am going is 8x32.

The best compact binos I've yet to find are the 1st gen Bushnell Custom 7x26's. I've compared them to the Zeiss/Leica 20-25mm's, the early 6x30 Yosemites, and they are still the better glass. And they weigh 12 oz.
Better View Desired still has those binos listed as the reference standard for compacts.
