Getting a "Need" list ready for Northern Idaho Elk Hunting 2017.

Who carries a handgun during Archery season and what do you carry?

They can't be used on deer or elk during archery season so the only reason to carry one is for self defense against bears and PETA. Use an appropriate caliber. If it's a bear, make it dead. If it's PETA, make it hurt for a while before becoming dead.

Yes 100% self defense. Will be hunting around CDA. Any brown bear worries?

Coach529, My suggestion would be a revolver(single or double action)with a barrel length of 5 or less inches. Calibers starting at .44mag up thru and including the 500 S&W. However the 460 and 500 Smith's are quite heavy and a bit large. Go with heavy for caliber, hard cast, wide metplat, bullets pushed pretty hard. The views expressed are those of the author, and do not guarantee success!! grin memtb

I'm taking a 38 Super when I head out for elk/deer in December.

130 FMJ around 1250. Figure it'll put a hole in whatever I need it to and I don't mind dunking that pistol in the salt. There are some tidal sloughs I'll be hunting.

I carry my Glock 20 10 mm loaded with 16 rounds of the Buffalo Boar 220 gr hard cast load for bears.
And an extra 15 round mag of 180 gr Hornady XTP HP's for any 2-legged predators I might encounter. wink

Never a bad choice, either.

You mean grizzlies? If you get closer to the MT border, it's possible I think. I don't know their exact range in that end of the state. If you're attacked by a griz, don't shoot until he bites you. Otherwise, dealing with the feds will be worse than dealing with the bear.
