Never seen one, but plan to stop the truck, fidget around inside a bit, and then bolt like a bat out of hell for the decoy and wrestle it to the ground.

Idaho's road laws specify that you have to be off the roadway AND the shoulder or barrow pit. IOW, you have to be in the pucker brush, completely clear of the road bed. It also says 'maintained' road. We have mega hundreds of miles of roads that have and will never see a grader. It's legal to shoot from or across those. The road in this article is maintained although you'd swear it hasn't been graded since WWII. It's a rough one with more potholes than road. Since the hunter is doing the shooting and it says YOU (the person) can't shoot from a road, I highly doubt that having your muzzle beyond the road will get you off the hook. You need to get your whole carcass off of it. These laws aren't rocket science. How hard is it to just take a couple steps off the road and be legal? Point is he would not be shooting from the road if not for the decoy. Chances of shooting a real elk from the road are very slim. If caught doing that, well then write him up.

A guy I know saw one and carefully drove past it. He later hiked back into the area and sneaked into place- undetected. Once he knew he had them, he shot the crap out of the decoy! They came out hollaring and he kept shooting until he was dry. They were pissed but couldn't do anything!
One year I hung an old ratty trophy up in a tree about 150 yards off the road. I went back later and it was still hanging but shot to pieces- wonder how many guys I suckered!!

Geeez. Idaho is so far behinnd the times--Colorado uses robotic deer. And if a guy shoots one he also has to pay for the cost of repairs!

Disabled hunter. I qualify as a 100% disabled Vet. Can even shoot out of a vehicle as long as it is not moving. Again, I can but I won't. As long as I can make it into the woods I will hunt like everyone else and I can make it into the woods. If the day comes I cannot make it I will rethink my hunting but that is a long way away. Ok, gotchya. A few years ago, a live 'decoy' got some guys pegged. The area between me and the NV border is very popular for bowhunters. There are roads everywhere and there's always been a problem with road hunters. This time a pickup with 2 guys in the cab and 2 in the rear was going down one of these roads. Another pickup was coming toward them. When they were about 100 yds apart, a deer ran across the road between them. The 1st pickup stopped and the 2 guys in back stood up and started launching arrows. The other pickup was a game warden.

Watched a video out local guys put together starring the "robo deer". Phuqqin hilarious to the tune of "bad boys" in the background. They said when the dingbats are hesitant to shoot that the tail flick button gets them every time.
Like hunting but hate hunters.....

From what I've witnessed in these decoy operations, hunters are caught not just shooting on or across roads, but right out of their vehicles, after dark, or closed season, using spotlights, often in the wrong units, and often carrying other hunter's tags.
If it was just a matter of shooting from the edge of the roadway, I don't think the decoys would be used much. Hunters w/o ethics are just waiting for an opportunity, and decoys give it to them. The ethical hunters around here are happy as hell when these guys are caught.
Clearly over zealous cops can screw things up as fast as anyone, but that's not been what I've seen around my neck of the woods.

When my son was about 8 years old I took him hunting for deer. He had been asking to go hunting so I got an OTC buck tag (then available) and took him. After hunting all day and seeing many does but no bucks we were driving out of the area when I spotted a "doe" bedded down about 30 yards off the road in some brush. I backed up and was surprised that the "doe" didn't bolt. She was just laying there with her jaw moving up and down as if chewing cud. Watched about 3-4 minutes and the deer never moved other than the jaw. My son was absolutely thrilled at seeing that deer. As I drove away I was sure it was a decoy but never told my son since it seemed to be a magic moment.

Wife and I were out camping and cooking for a youth camp out at Scott Lake years ago. I heard a deep rumbling and stopped listened. Five minutes later out of the woods comes a bright red F-350 diesel, two guys in the front and two standing in the back. All decked out in full camo and the two in the back with there bows in hand and arrows knocked. I laughed until I cried.

My friend the OSP F&G officer told of seeing a VW bug stop with it's light on a decoy he was watching. He pulled up behind the VW and walked up beside it. Woman driving told him to be quiet, her husband was trying to shoot a deer. It was a good three hours before daylight the day before season opened.

I hunted some land that bordered a paved road at one end. Down that road a few hundred yards from our property there was a field on the other side of the road. Several times as I drove away at night after hunting I witnessed someone shoot deer from their vehicle. Several other guys in our club saw them too, these folks did this stuff often. One of our members called the DNR and gave them exact directions. There was a mile marker on the road that these dudes were driving right past to pull into the field and retrieve their kill. And this field was off the South side of the road.
The DNR showed up one day and put robo-deer in one of OUR fields. A quarter mile from where they were directed to, and on the North side of the road to boot.
Just before the end of legal shooting light one of our guys was walking out a little early and came out into the field between the road and the fake deer. He started hammering mr. robo-deer! He was wearing orange, far enough from the road to be legal, etc.
After the dust settled everybody involved had a good laugh.

My brother ran to get breakfast one morning. When he got back there was one lone duck out in front of his blind. He creeps up, crouches next to the blind and shoots the duck. As he's squeezing off a second shot, some guy starts screaming at him from the blind, "hey you shot my fuΔking decoy!"

I think Barsness once wrote "Don't leave your decoys in a Montana rancher's stock tank."
Or something close to that.

One of my best friends is a paraplegic. Hunts off a quad and can hunt from a vehicle.
I PRAY for the day he blows the fug out of one of those decoys and I'm with him to hand him more rounds as the fish cop comes up waving his arms for him to cease fire.

Our local GW told of a decoy set up where a guy came by and shot from the vehicle. They took his rifle and issued a citation.
They moved the decoy to another location and that very afternoon busted the same guy. Got another rifle and issued another citation. The guy was shouting about "entrapment".
Some folks don't learn from their mistakes.

I don't understand people. If you're driving down the road and can take a 200" mule deer off your mirror, more power to you.
I could give a fugk.

I'm friends with our local game warden, and he said they use decoy once in a great while where there has been a lot of complaints, but they have to use a small buck or a doe.
It is considered entrapment around here to use a trophy decoy.

Some friends did the same thing. Problem with hunters shooting over their fence onto their property. Hung an old ass mount on a tree like he was peeking around the tree. They loaded 3 cans of black powder in the deer head.
