I just received a Savage Model 99 and hoping you guys can help me with the year and some other info. The serial number is 6468xx and in 300 savage. ,the rifle is in beautiful condition. The one odd thing is the checkering on the butt stock is different from the checkering on the forearm. I know the gun was bought new and I got it from the original owner, was this common? Thank you for any help

On the date, in 1949 Savage went to the Lever Boss Code for dating. On the front of the pivot point of the lever there will be an oval with 1 or 2 numbers and one letter. The numbers are inspectors and the letter is the date code. They started with "A" in 49, "B" in 50, etc. Your serial is after the 1949 LBC so you need to get the magnifying glass out and see what's in the oval. Folks with more knowledge will step in on the others stuff, Joe.

The SN dates to most likely 1952. To tell for sure give us the letter in Lever Boss Code; stamped in an oval on the bottom just forward of the lever hinge pin. The oval contains 1 or 2 digits followed by a letter; "D" would be 1952.
Model could be a Model 99R, 99RS or 99EG; if it a has a schnabel-tipped forearm, its a 99EG.
They did not ship with different types of checkering.

I took a look at the oval. I can't make out the first number ,but the second appears to be a zero,if that helps.

You want the letter, the numbers are inspector stamps. They did not use an "O" or "Q" because they look so much alike. The stamp can be hard to read, some are so lightly struck it's very hard to read, Joe.

It appears that it was originally a 99R and the buttstock has been replaced with a post 1960 buttstock.
Looks like Paul and I were typing at the same time.

If you remove the forearm you will find a ser# stamped into the wood. it maybe the correct forearm .. if the numbers match then at least you'll know it's a 99R

As others have noted, it started it's life as a pre mil R, and the buttstock has been replaced with a post mil specimen.

I have the correct buttstock for that rifle, and with proper bribery may part with same.
