Whats the straight poop on a 22lr upper--is it worth the time and money? do any perform better than the others? will they work on a class III lower?

Unless you want an SBR. No way I'm spending another $200 for a tax stamp on an M&P. But I don't have an answer to the original question. A buddy recently bought one of the CMMG kits with a barrel and built a dedicated upper. He likes it but hasn't shot it much yet.

Far easier than a separate upper

Yes, but why would you spend another $200 on a plastic rifle to make it a legal SBR and then have to cut the bbl down and have it threaded if you want and SBR for suppressor use.
I started out thinking same as you, and I still agree if you want a 16" bbl. But, if you want shorter bbl, a dedicated upper is the better route. I have an M&P but I am still piecing together an upper so that I can have a 10" bbl and use with a suppressor (approx 16" total length then). A 16" bbl with a can is not anywhere near as handy as an SBR with the can, not to mention it doesn't look anywhere near as "tacticool"... Haha!

CMMG, TACCOM3G or Nordic NC-22. A good .22lr upper is a handy thing to have around.

Initially got my feet wet by purchasing a drop in CMMG unit and acquired about eight 25 round magazines. Accuracy in 5.56 barrels was not 100% to my liking in my 7-8-9" twist rifles, the exception being an original Colt SP-1 with 1-12" twist that was okay. I've since gone the dedicated .22 route with two builds using CMMG rimfire barrels. I tried to leave the first as a 16" upper that I would swap out but decided that a complete assembled rifle was better for me and I had the lower parts laying around anyway.
Considered going the S&W route because the price was tempting. After handling one and the fact that I am already invested in Black Dog Machine magazines for the CMMG style, I decided I didn't like the lighter weight and plastic of the S&W. I prefer the weight of my rimfire ARs to mimic a centerfire version. If I was outfitting a few youngsters though I could see this as a likely option.
Just got done with a dedicated AR pistol build that is suppressed with a 4.5" CMMG bbl. Topped with an Aimpoint red dot sight it is without a doubt (can't stress this enough) the most shooting fun that Ive had in a loooooong time! Using a Gemtech Tundra 9mm suppressor it really is impressive to me. The sound is about equally divided between bullet impact, the action cycling, and the report. Can see this one going to the range everytime I do.
My CMMG versions have basically performed 100% to date. Haven't tried any others but a lot of them have similar construction.
