I was working a day shift on the orthopedic floor at Breakenridge Hospital in Austin, TX. I was 20 and newly married, going to school full-time at the University of Texas. Don't remember why I was working the day shift, as I almost always pulled the afternoon or night shifts.

Brookley AFB, Mobile, Alabama. I was in a maintenance hanger and heard it on the radio, most of the guys were on break outside the hanger when I told them what I had heard the reaction was shock almost to a man.

Which one of you won the competition???? No one won: everyone received a "participation trophy" in accordance with early political correctness. As for me, I'd worked late the night before and slept late. I was shaving in the bathroom of a tiny apartment I was renting in Hollywood, Calif.
