I will be needing to scope a stock 10/22 for a teenager. 2X7 or 3X9.
No seirous target shooting, mostly plinking and ground squrriels.

I want a decent scope, but I don't want to spend a lot, like $100 - $150.
Two scopes that have caught my attention are;

Nikon Pro-Staff @ $100 to $150
and
Burris FF 2 @ $150 +

Any thoughts ?

Buy a "rimfire" scope. The recoil from a 10-22, can be hard on a scope. Both Nikon and Burris make good rimfire scopes that would work great for you.. Either power range would work well and help to prepare them for using a variable power scope on a hunting rifle as well.

I bought 2 of the Nikon Pro Staff Rimfire scopes when they were on sale. Put one of them on my 10-22, it's been great.

I've had a Weaver Classic K4 in Grand Slam rings on a T09 base for quite a while now, great set up and reliable as a hammer. I might get flamed for this but...Buddy of mine put a clam pack Simmons 4x rimfire scope on his not too long ago and it certainly seems to get the job done, if it's a tight budget I can't say it would not work pretty well. Think it came with rings for under $50. Not as good as my Japanese Weaver, but a lot nicer than the old C4 on my other .22.

another nikon vote here.
I used to have a 4x power on my 10/22 now I have a 2-7. love it. 3-9 is almost too be big on that gun.
vortex diamond back in 2-8 would be sweet.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Talk about "almost too big", mine would be. My 10/22 carries a Tasco World Class 4-16X40. I love it.

OK, looks like the Nikon Pro Staff is the way to go.

Second question, the base that comes with a 10/22, does it take standard Weaver style rings, or the smaller 7/8" .22 rings ?

Buy a rimfire scope or an moderately priced scope with an adjustable objective. Most of the shooting with a .22 will be under 50 yds and most scopes are parallax free at 100 yds. I have a Bushnell Trophy 4-12 on mine. All my .22 have adjustable objective scopes.

The Weaver 2-7x28 is a nice compact scope that can be found for around $150. I have one on a 10/22 KRBIBBZ stainless laminated mannlicher.

Or, you can regularly find the 2-7x33 or 3-9x40 Leupld VX-1 scopes on sale for under $200.

I always replace the bolt buffers with a soft, polyurethane, unit to cushion the bolt slam and that may be a contributing factor for why I've never had a scope failure on a 10/22.

I've heard of scope failure on 10/22 but have not had a problem with my Tasco and it has been on it for thousands of rounds. Sometimes hundreds of shots in a day.

I use a Burris 4x Mini. No longer made they show up on the bay often. Terrific scope for a small rifle, IMO.

I bought the rifle new in the late 70’s for $69 and it still has the original steel buffer in it. I went through a couple cheaper scopes namely Bushnell Sportview 3-9 scopes. About 15 years ago I upgraded the scope to get better glass with more magnification and an adjustable objective. 15 years ago I chose a Leupold VXII 4-12x40AO. If I change the scope again it will be the 6.5-20x40EFR with fine plex. That is what is on all my 17HMR's. The higher magnification is much better for my old eyes and the target knobs are just handy.

Initially I look to be over your budget with the 4-12 at $325 but in the long run I will get the scope for free and may get paid to use it. For me this justifies the initial price. The AO is a must for me on a 22 to give me a good clear parallax free sight picture right in as close as 50 feet. Though it doesn't have knobs per say I take off the elevation cap and dial in my dopes to kill squirrels out to 200 yards with Stingers. It is still bright and clear as the day I got it. I’m very happy with it.

And here my 10/22 still has the el-cheapo BSA 2-7x 32mm scope that I put on it in 1999 as sort of a temporary thing until I could eventually get something good on it. Mine is also just a plinker/squirrel gun and I found that BSA to be better than I thought it would be. It sure ain't no Leupold, but it seemed to work pretty good anyway for what I was using it for. After 5 or 6 years I decided to just keep it on there until it either dies or I get sick of it. So here it is 2016 and it's still there. It works and its never given me a problem so I guess its earned a place on that 10/22. Sometimes it's nice to go cheapo and still get satisfied. I also discovered that I feel 2-7x magnification is just right for my plinking/small game usage.

Earlier this year I bought Vortex 2-7-35. I needed something with a wide field of view and this one was the best I could fine. (19.3 feet at 2x) Also the parallax is set at 50 yards which is ideal for my type of hunting. At around $160 on Amazon, the value vs quality is excellent.

This is a scope that's on the short list.

Weaver V9 or Clearridge Rimfire (they are the same scope) are two quality rimfire scopes in the $250 range.

I have the Clearridge on my daughters 10/22 and it works well.
My other 2 10/22s wear the SS Classic 1-4 which is all I need on a 50-100 yard rifle.

No serious target shooting, mostly plinking and ground squrriels.

I did some scope switching a while back that left my 10/22 w/o glass. So after spending way too much time researching, I settled on a regular Leupold VX-1 2-7x33, which has click adjustments and Muti-Coat 4 coatings that used to be on the almost top of the line VX-III's back in the day.

I re-set the parallax to 50 yards, sighted it in, and was plinkin' at will (and everyone else) with reckless abandon. Quite pleased with it. Bought at Optics Planet for $178.00 delivered, which is a only hair over your budget.

I for sure could use a scope for my 10/22 and Winchester...
It gets old going thru a couple hundred rounds of rimfire and not getting tight groups..

I've bought two Nikon Pro-Staff rimfires in the 3-9 range this year and couldn't be more pleased. Yes the BDC works.

aalf's VX-1 idea is also good but requires effort.
